Besides the slow death of Soi 33 I also hear nothing positive from the bar owners in Cowboy, lower Sukhumvit and Soi 22. Business is in general down compared to last year, the lower number of farang tourist spend less, and the Asians usually do not visit the same areas. They also spend less.

Another problem is that nearly all bars and massage parlours have problems to recruit new girls. There is a massive shortage of girls. All bar owners with a business model that is based on girls / bar fines are complaining. In many gogo bars there are now coyote girls dancing, that are hired from specific recruitment agencies. Those girls dance, but they don't go with customers.

The higher quality girls have nearly disappeared from the well known farang-driven red light districts. Most of the girls that apply for jobs here at Livingstone's Lodge will NOT be hired. Because they simply don't fit in here. Behavior that disgusting, no style, it's unbelievable what's left on the market. The higher quality girls are now working in Japanese clubs (more money) and in the high end massage parlours of Rhatchadapisek and Phetchaburi Road. They charge THB 3, 500. 00. THB 7, 000. 00 per session.

For some time Stickman has written about complaints from bar managers regarding the difficulty bars have attracting and retaining girls and that the demand for coyote dancers outstrips supply. Similarly he has chronicled the decline on Soi 33. One of my previous post also detailed that birth rates in Thailand have been declining for decades. No doubt this is having a significant impact on the number of young ladies seeking employment in the sex industry; and of course Thailand's strong economy is a factor.

Many sources state tourism is booming in Thailand, and Bangkok in particular. I mentioned in previous posts that international tourism data ranks Bangkok as the third most visited destination in the world after London and Paris. As the indian economy has boomed over the last several years, the increasing numbers of the middle class are taking to the air to discover south east asia. Open any leading indian newspaper and you will see dozens of tour companies advertising package deals that include BKK and Pattaya for like a 5 day trip for the equivalent of $500 USD or 15, 000 baht. This includes airfare, accomodation on a twin share basis and transportation and visits to certain tourist attractions.

In my last three trips to BKK I've seen a very different demographic of indian tourist discovering this great city. Saw a lot of young couples partying together at places like QBar and some of the rooftop venues around the sukhumvit tourist areas. Same was the trend at some of the late night discos. It is common knowledge here that for a good party at the more trendy and upmarket non P4P venues, it ends up being a much cheaper night out in BKK than in Mumbai or delhi.

The world is getting smaller every year and I totally agree that each year the percentage of non P4P indians travelling to Thailand as tourists will continue to increase IMHO.
