I thought this can be a great resource. It lists a few regions of Brazil including Rio. I was surprised to find 2 Ipanema beaches currently not suitable for swimming, but this is apparently changing all the time. Might be worth to check regularly.

This never happens out at Barra posto 6, never. The locals tell me this is the best 'hood in Rio, with strong law enforcement. This is another reason this is the best area to live IMHO.

So, in summary, I highly recommend avoiding copa especially, but also Ipanema, and choosing instead Barra posto 1 - 6, or in Zona Sul, Botafogo or Jardim Botanico. These are upper middle class areas where law enforcement is strong and there are fewer gringo tourists, which you as a traveler want to avoid.
