On Avenida Ortega y Gasset north of Avenida 27 de Febrero (while I was on my way to Casa Theresa and thereafter Casa Azul), I was told by a taxi driver those street walkers are transvestites. On Avenida St. de Paul I saw street walkers as I drove by, some looked like chicas, others I wasn't sure about.

In Santiago, on Calle de Sol near the monument and around the monument there were transvestites.

In Sosua, late at night, I can remember seeing what looked liked a transvestite trolling around the streets. You will also see a few transvestites in Classicos.

In Puerto Plata I can remember seeing dudes dressed as women in Mangu disco in Playa Dorada complex.

Next to Duque de Wellington is Hotel Navarro which is relatively new, it has 12 rooms on second level, 1500 to 1800 pesos, rooms were are clean (I saw one and has used on for short term on first level). National and international strippers from Foxys live there. I have made friendship with cuban bar girl which is cute.

I am heading back to the DR in a couple weeks for a lazy man's mongering trip.

This is my itinerary, I have a few questions:

I am flying into SDQ for my first time, meeting up with two of my favorita's that I met in PP but live in SDQ and taking them to Bavaro the next day by bus.

I am thinking I want a hotel for the one night that I am in SDQ near the airport so I don't have to pay the $40. Taxi fare into the center of the city but I am open to suggestions. We will be leaving the next day by bus to Bavaro, where is the bus terminal in relation to the airport? I read on a travel forum that there are two buses to Bavaro, one stops at every shithole on the way and the other is nonstop, anybody know which one is which? I don't mind bus rides but the less time on the bus the more time for "other things". Any suggestions in regards to hotel selection would be appreciated, I am only checking in one girl as the other is meeting up with us at the bus terminal, and if anyone can enlighten me on the bus situation I would be very grateful.

Bavaro is nice, many all inclusive hotels, all price ranges. Some good normal nightlife in Bavaro, some nightlife events are held on the beach, with tourists and some rich dominicans in attendance.

Supposedly about 5 kilometers from the airport. Maybe you can call that hotel and tell them you want to stay for one night and catch a bus to Bavaro, they might have more information about whether any buses stop near their hotel.

That is probably the closest normal hotel to the airport. There are some cabanas on the road to Boca Chica but I don't think you want to spend more than 4 hours in a cabana.

Taking a taxi into Boca Chica will probably cost 25 dollars or more.

Bavaro/Punta Cana is nice, good to see, some good normal nightlife at times, Bavaro some has nice beaches. If you just want to relax in an all inclusive with some chicas, Bayahibe is not bad for that. No nightlife in Bayahibe, nice beach, some good all inclusive hotels. All inclusive room rates in a good hotel in Bayahibe before January are about 115 per night for two people. Bayahibe is closer to Santo Domingo Airport then Bavaro/Punta Cana.

I will make this quick, today is my last day/night in the city. I firgure I will go to a Halloween party, then maybe monger. Jaosousa has said almost all, but with my limited knowledge of the city transportation system I believe you eventually have to move to the city to go to Bavaro. Expreso Bavaro goes directly to Bavaro and stops only on every hotel try to get the earliest trip which I am not sure it is at 9:00 am or 11:00 am. There is a bus scheduled every two hours. Cost was 300 pesos on July, it took me more than 4 hours to arrive to Bavaro. The other bus is on Parque Enriquillo, I believe this is the one with the stops. Both bus stations are west of river , see the map for location. You don't have to pay $40 for a taxi from airport, call Apolo taxi, they charge 1000 pesos or $28, I never paid more than 180 pesos for any intra city transfer, no matter how far the place was, no matter time of day, even with reasonable waiting time. I never waited more than 5minutes for any intra city transfer, they have units moving around the city 24/7 Stay at Jaguar or Riazor, you are not going to regret.

I arrive in SDQ at 4 pm and probably won't feel like going out on the town because I want to catch the early bus to Bavaro and we have to meet up with my second chica. The Jaragua has the casino so it will give me something to do that night for a few hours other than bang my little spinner "companion" and at $75. it's not too outrageously priced.

Thanks[/QUOTE]If you walk out the back entrance of the Jaragua, (through the parking lot and the security gate), directly across from the security gate is Manolos Restaurant. It has outdoor seating which is raised about three feet above the sidewalk, fresh fruit juices, cheeseburgers, chicken, pasta etc. It will be cheaper than the Champions Sport Bar inside the Jaragua (15-20 U.S. dollars for a cheeseburger with fries, after the 26% in taxes is factored in).

Drinks in the casino should be free if you are gambling. Otherwise to buy a small glass of Presidente beer at the corner bar in the casino bar is 250 pesos (almost 7 dollars) ridiculous. Live band every night in the corner bar, cute singers.

$75 is a good rate for the Jaragua (if the 26% in taxes is not included in that rate, the total price will go up by about 20 dollars).

Santo Domingo does not have many touristy areas where people walk around at night. Zona Colonial can be nice at night, but the later it gets, the streets in Zona Colonial get deserted. Near Atarazana in Zona Colonial are several restaurants with outdoor seating, which are romantic at night. The restaurants overlook a large open plaza (plaza espana?) with a view of the river.

One of best times to drive a car in Santo Domingo is later in the evening. Not much traffic and late night you are allowed to go through red lights (stop first if you have the red and make sure no other cars are coming on the other road). I have been told it is legal to proceed through a red light late at night.

Around the Jaragua is fairly safe to walk around. Walking on the Malecon between the Jaragua and the Melia and V Centannario hotels is safe at night.

Behind the Jaragua is Avenida Independencia which is busy during the day and at night it is a little dark with less traffic. Not many people walking around on Avenida Indepedencia late at night, you will see chicas looking for clients on Avenida Independencia at night. Some local guys hang around the rear entrance of the Jaragua and Avenida Independencia and will approach gringos offering to show where the chica bars are. Lapsus is close to the rear entrance of the Jaragua (across the street and to the left), one block down to the left and another left on a side street is La Parada.

If you exit the rear of the Jaragua and go right, after about a block or two, Avenida Pasteur crosses Independencia, make a right on Pasteur and girl's house and sky house are on the left hand side of Pasteur. You can also leave the front entrance of the Jaragua and take the Malecon to Avenida Pasteur, or the street where La Parada is.

I usually bring some dollar bills to tip the guys who will bring the luggage to the room.

Melia casino seems to be more popular than the Jaragua Casino, usually some attractive chicas in the Hotel Melia Casino and while you are there you can pop into Coppa Discoteca for a drink (which has an entrance from the casino, free to enter).

A taxi driver can act as a kind of Guide in Santo Domingo. Boricua Online has put together an excellent map using google maps, you can find the link for the map in the Reports of Distinction thread.

With the information on that map, you will probably be better informed than most so called guides. Post #1863 is the link for the map.

Other members have phone numbers of taxi drivers they used and can recommend.

Read Bijou's report, post number 2112, also in the Reports of Distinction thread. I believe Bijou also posted the phone number of a taxi driver that he used in one of his reports.

Most taxi fares in Santo Domingo are 150 pesos (a little over 4 dollars). A good taxi driver who waits for you when you visit venues will not try to grub free drinks from you. If you want the taxi driver to have a drink with while you visit different places, that is your choice, a good taxi driver will not try to get freebies from you.

Once you spend a few days in Santo Domingo you will begin to get a feel for the lay of the land there. If you stay at Riazor or Jaguar hotels you will be within walking distance of different places to score chicas. After you explore the city a little, you will see that you don't need a guide.

I have been to Santo Domingo several times in the last few years. I have learned that the Dominican people are always looking for an angle and should be trusted very carefully. On one of my trips , I meet a tour guide that spoke pretty good English (for the most part be careful with Dominicans that speak English). This guy was very friendly and helpful, I liked having a translator with me. We have become good friends and he has earned my trust. His name is Santo and he would be happy to be of service to anyone that is visiting Santo Domingo. He will stay with you for as long or short as you wish. He knows all the spots and always makes sure I am paying the right price not the Gringo price. Just call him a few days in advance and tell him that Chris gave you his number. Just speak slow and clear and he will understand you. I have recomended him before and everyone that has used him is happy they did. He stays with me all day and I give him $30. I will be in Santo Dom. on Nov.19-23 who's in. You don't need a tour guide, but if you can find someone that you can trust, it is so much better to have one.
