In regards to prostitutes in Rio, I have the impression that there may be something called the Veblen Effect heavily involved.

In other words, when two different but very similar products have significantly different prices, people will prefer and perhaps even enjoy more the higher priced product even though objectively they are both of equal quality.

I get the impression, looking at the online ads, that R$150 and R$500 women may in many cases be of equal quality however because she is MORE expensive there are customers who will want the R$500 one.

Is this true, or am I misunderstanding it?

With great sadness I'm leaving Brazil after 4 wonderful and joyous months. I've used this site a few times (as well as the local ones) to devour intel and for that I am extremely grateful. My two cents worth after 4 months in this incredible country:

Where to stay.

I was based in Santa Teresa for 2 months, mostly because a friend lent me her beautiful apartment there but also because it's a great area (it's like Lisbon) and ideally located for central, which is a 5-10 min taxi from Santa. I've spent the last couple of months in Sao Conrado (in an airbnb) which is also ideal as it's 10 minutes taxi to Barra or a quick subway or taxi (15-20 minutes) to Copa. Sao Conrado is the optimal beach location I think (and Carioca friends back this up) being similar to Barra (incredibly safe, clean, etc) but much closer to other interesting areas (Leblon, Ipanema, Gavea, etc) - and it has one of the best beaches in Rio. Copa and Ipanema I find too hectic, the chances of petty crime are high there. Each to their own.

Photoacompanhantes.

Can be useful at times, if you filter to see only those with reviews you can be very sure of great service, if not it's 50-50 if they're real or provide half decent service. However, there are some real gems to be found if you get lucky. I like to include this in my mix because it keeps it interesting, you will be burnt from time to time though.

BarraVIPS etc.

Some incredible girls on here but the prices are high (400-600 per hour) compared to other Rio options. It's quite hard to find reviews on the girls because many do this very short-term with fake names. I fucked models and mega influencers (with hundreds of thousands of IG followers) who did a week on the site to fill a gap in their earnings (times are tough) and will probably never do so again. Choose wisely and you can score model standard girls who are 18-20. Private55 can be decent but only if you have reviews to back up your choice (local sites are your best friend).

Prives.

I like the prive model, in particular Creche do Maridos, Onix, and Eden. Easy to walk in, get the presentation, select if you want or walk out. The girls tend to be fairly happy and this is important for me. Expect to pay 100-150 for half an hour, 150-250 for an hour. There are so many, I've probably used 5 or 6 because I get what I need, with more time I'd diversify and check more out. A great area for exploration (I'm going to check out the 116 this week. Thanks Vagabundo for the tip on this one, it sounds fantastic).

Clubs.

Again, each to their own but I hate the club experience (and I love clubs in normal life). Loud shitty music, expensive (compared to the other options), and just a weird vibe. Don't get me wrong, there are some serious hotties to be had, but the experience just doesn't do it for me.

Pornstars.

I had some success searching for Brazilian porn stars and reaching out to them via Twitter. I'm not going to share my IP here but I'll give one small tip: Camila Flowers. Covid.

I had Covid last year and am still full of antibodies, therefore I don't care so much about Covid. Many things can kill us, in "the west" (debatable if Brazil should be included in that definition) we're so insulated that any slight risk brings about an absurd reaction, in Brazil (most of) the people know that life is short and there are many risks, as such they live in a somewhat fatalistic manner that has been wonderful to experience.

This is not my first time in Brazil and it won't be my last, I'm considering using the investor visa to buy some property in Rio and spend 3-6 months here every winter. I've been all over the world but I love this country and its beautiful people.

You can find just as nice quality of girls in a cheap privê as in an expensive terma. It might just take more time to find the privê-gems if you don't know where to look.
Also, you have to consider the brazilian price logic. If the business is going bad and they have few clients, they'll raise the price thinking they'll earn more money.

Longer opening hours for bars and restaurants, they'll close at 9 PM. IMO opinion a strange decision to make now, considering Brazil just broke new record in covid-19 death toll.

[/QUOTE]I'm thinking that also. If you have no time to shop around, or if money is no object, you might be better off with the tier 1 termases. However if you are in Rio for a month and are on a budget, it would seem to pay to shop around for a few days and get good quality and good price.

I am a little skeptical about the real low bargain prices at Vila Mimosa or even some ads on [URL]www.photoacompanhantes.com[/URL] for R$60 an hour. Can you get a really hot young girl for that bargain price, or is it pretty likely to be an older, ugly, drugged or starfish provider?

I'm not sure wine is a good comparison. There are many more variables with prostitutes.

Sperto is right. If you look hard enough, you can find gems in cheap privês. If you only have a week in Rio and are comfortable financially, you are likely frequenting top termas and calling high-end escorts. (Hopefully well-reviewed and vetted escorts.).

As far as the variables with garotas, there are factors beyond looks. There are the all-important characteristics personality and performance. These tend to suffer the hotter the garota, but this is not a hard and fast rule. This is especially true if you have the personality and performance to get the best out of a girl. Often I find a hot enough Brazilian girl who is not the hottest girl around, but she is sexy and has a certain spark. If she delivers in bed and out of bed, I tend to hang out with her awhile.

Additionally for fucking on-site at the venue, many guys are going to reject Vila Mimosa and crappy privês regardless of price. They will pay for a top termas experience. That's why some guys like Sao Paulo's boate Scandallo. They like the high end club experience. And yes, the volume of "hot" girls under one roof is another variable with Rio termas.

Maybe for the 500 you are paying for the chick to be all dolled up and not just for sex. Same as for wine you could be paying for the bottle, advertising, and prestige, and not necessarily the liquid inside. If you can get around the marketing aspects, then your answer is right there. There are a lot of shit cars that many people have consistently been paying tons of money for for many many years.

Having said that, I'm not sure you are getting much for the extra R$350 between the R$150 girl and the R$500, except saving time hunting around for a few days. At least that's what it sounds like to me from this forum and from the online ads. Maybe a real blonde from Rio Grande do Sul, sample photo attached, will invariably cost R$500+, however rumor has it that they lack some enthusiasm, so overall I'm not sure this is higher value. As someone who has lived among the masses and holds a few near and dear, I concur with your sentiment about Brazilians and how they live life. Not sure I will ever do serious business with them, because of that same live in the moment perspective and seeing more than a few screw over their closest friends, but yeah, to hell with the gloom and doom.
