Not interested in Ilha Grande at this time, just was there last January. Actually IG along with Parati was the last international trip I took before the fucking Covid. But yeah, it's amazing.

There are plenty of nude beaches in Brazil. Many of these beaches are extremely beautiful.
Don't get any ideas like "Wow, I'm going to a brazilian nude beach, take photos and take part in a giant suruba on the beach."

Some notes on nude beaches in Brazil:
1. In several of the best nude beaches no single men are allowed (that's not the case in Abricó).
2. I can only recall one nude beach in Brazil where girls were in majority, normally single men are in majority (boiolas are not rare).
3. You have to remove your clothes.
4. If you try to take hidden photos, be careful or you might be beaten up. Taking photos of your GF is OK.
5. In European nude beaches many of the women are a sight you wish you could forget. In Brazilian nude beaches there are really smoking hot girls.
6. Bring a girl to the nude beach. If you bring a girl it will be more accepted to check out both the single girls and the girls in company with guys. Bringing girl shows that you're not a threat or a dirt-bag.
7. It's possible to have sex with your GF at the nude beaches, but be very discreet. Do it in the water or in the the bushes. You must be respectful.
8. Don't expect sex orgies. There are couples and also single girls looking for swinger action. However that action will not happen on the beach, rather in a motel.

P.S I recommend biking from Copacabana to Grumari and Abricó. The ride have a fantastic scenery. Copacabana-Ipanema-Leblon-ciclovia Tim Maia-São Conrado-Barra da Tijuca-Reserva da Barra-Recreio-Prainha-Abricó-Grumari. Round-trip, 85 km. The last part, after Recreio is hilly and very beautiful.
P.P.S On my nude beach list Abricó isn't close to be one of the best ones.

I have been reading everything which I can find about crime in Rio and everyone seems to have a different opinion, however this is the general impression which I have gotten:

Non-violent crime. Anything valuable which is not locked up or securely attached to your body will quite possibly vanish.

Violent crime. If there are a lot of people around you are safe, even if it is a poor area such as the infamous Vila Mimosa. If there are not a lot of people around, even of it is in tourist area like Copacabana Beach, however it is after sunset, you will quite possibly to be approached by a gentleman pointing a weapon at you who will demand your valuables and he means business.

Does this sound about right?

Does this sound about right?[/QUOTE]Just replace "quite possibly" with "might" -- then it sounds about right. Then again, you MIGHT become a victim of a crime even when there are people around. And things have become worse in Copa during the pandemic from what I've heard.

The most recent Lonely Planet Guide to Rio (2019) seems pretty laid back. There is a brief section about safety. Crime is a problem, but just take a few common sense precautions and you should be OK. It sounds like New York City (my home town).

Seems to take a middle ground and basically advices "Don't go outside when it's dark. Period. Otherwise it's OK".

Looking through this forum there also seem to be varying levels of caution.

I am sure that if someone is going to stay in 5 star luxury for a week, the chance of something bad happening is fairly slim. However if you're a budget traveler going for a couple of months, then chance of being a victim at some point is a lot higher.

So, within reason, how do you minimize that risk?

I've found Rio to be pretty safe if you're used to big city life. I've lived mostly in London, NYC, and LA and Rio doesn't feel any more dangerous than those sorts of cities most of the time. Petty crime is a MAJOR issue around Ipanema, Copa, etc. Basically anywhere there are tourists. Phone snatching is a daily part of life here, but again, it is in London, NYC, etc too (I've had my phone snatched twice in London / NYC). Obviously the danger rate goes WAY UP if you venture into favelas, this is such an obvious truism that it seems silly to even mention it. Gavea, Jardin Bontanico, Sao Conrado, Barra. These are extremely safe places where one would be unlucky to experience any sort of crime.

It's hard to gauge the risk, eg rich carioca friends of mine have fully bulletproof cars, the doors and windows can withstand fire from automatic weapons. However none of them have ever had to shelter so I think paranoia runs a bit wild here. The rich were scarred by the era (I think 80's /90's) when a lot of rich people were kidnapped in Brazil (like much of Latam). People in the rest of Brazil often recoil in horror when you tell them you'll be in Rio, they think it's a hellish danger zone. My experience having spent 5 of the last 12 months here is that it isn't that bad!

Hi all,

I went to Barra Euro Spa this week, it was decent but most of the 8 or so girls available where more typical Brazilian style with big asses and on the chunkier side, I'm more into the spinners. In any case I can recommend the prive, it was 200 for an hour and the place / service was good. Are there better prives in Barra though?

You can waste your time reading all the articles you want. This is my 20th year going to Brazil and I even lived there and went to school there. Nothing has ever remotely had a chance of happening to me. I go to Vila Mimosa. My ex girlfriend lived in City of God. I used to take the vans there transferring in Rocinha, late at night alone. I wear shorts and flip flops and a Timex sports watch.

On the other hand 2 weeks ago was my brother's very first time in Brazil. Within 5 minutes of arriving, like 10 am he went to walk on the beach with an 18 K gold chain and pendant with 50 diamonds around his neck. He no longer has it.

It has been said 1 million times on here how to minimize risk. Me 20 years most dangerous slums in the world at all times of night and nothing. Am I dead? My brother 5 minutes in the posh part of town and he is a statistic.

What do YOU see as being the difference? If you do not want to go then do not go. But why are you on this website wasting yours and everybody else's time trying convince yourself it is too dangerous for you to go? Again, you will have no idea until you see for yourself.

When the Covid stuff got going good I was at my place in Thailand. Thailand only had 3000 cases and 58 deaths during the 7 months that I was there. Meanwhile I am seeing reports of hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of cases throughout the rest of the world. Oh there must be chaos and people falling out in the streets.

Eventually I had to come back to America and the only difference I saw was people wearing masks. I have worn a mask and been to 8 countries since, (including Brazil where they are now saying is the worst ever) and have not gotten any Covid.

Meanwhile, my cousin is in Los Angeles shut up in the house and afraid to go outside for the past year. When she does go out, she has on 2 masks and a face shield. When we were together in November I had to ask her how the fuck was she ever in the Army being so afraid of every damn thing. She said her mom said the same thing. Maybe she has been watching too much TV and reading too many articles instead of going out into the real world.

My situation right now: I am on the verge of ordering the plane ticket, and staying for four months, however if, in spite of doing all the research and avoiding this and that, I'm probably going to end up looking down the end of a gun barrel at some point, then no. I'll pass on it. One chance in a hundred, or even one in ten, might be fine. But more than 50%, no. That's a deal breaker.

Well I'm only one month in Rio, I stay Copa / Ipanema. I feel really safe here. I was walking around alone or with friends on the beach after 00.00 and I really don't see a point why someone would come to me now and try to rob me. I mean why robbers from favela would come here now if there are almost 0 gringos. When I drink beer on the beach, sometimes some homeless comes and asks for money and that's it. Anyway I don't have too much money or expensive stuff with me, so even if someone attack me, what's the point to be afraid of? Just give him this few reals and that's it. I sometimes go out with my Brazilian dude he lives 10 years in Ipanema and he said he has never had any problem here and he goes out pretty often. I think people are afraid of own shadow now, it's ridiculous, during World War II people who lived in the village 30 km from front line wasn't so panic like idiots who are afraid to get sickness similar to flue or people are afraid to travel now because of Covid and before they did mongering in Thailand and ride a scooter pretty often being drunk where risk to die or get injured is huuuuuuge. Well I don't mind if these chickens stay at home, but it s annoying because they make rules I have to follow. Umm I need to get some beer and go to the beach to chill out, regards.

Hit me up. I live in barra. I have not really tried the barra prives, but the prices sound high. My gut instinct based on my 1000 posts (with my alter ego patmarbeleza1) is that Recreio may have best cost benefit. I import my bunda from centro termas and prives as a rule.

The best barra and rio and Brazil boate is perola negra, and the best non pro pick up spot is olegario maciel.
