Cali, however, has that Colombian flavor of fun, and like Cabroncito said, you won't be bumping into too many gringos.

I guess my main concern is with the so-called narco-traffickers or guerrillas. I think I can handle the normal crime stuff; just don't wanna get kidnapped or anything stupid like that just because I'm an American. I'm not rich, not by far, so holding me for a ransom would just be a practice run and waste both our time! Yeah, I actually haven't run across too many in Bogota who speak English, unless they are normal girls who work in the hotel or restaurant/tourism industry.

Missed you in Cali. I just spent about 10 days in Cali also and could not agree with Cabroncito more. I spend a lot of time outside mongering scene and developed a few friends in Cali but the same thing did not happen to me in Medellin.

Did not care much for Avenieda Sexta scene but loved the bars in La Setenta in Medellin.

Never had a problem with any Cab drivers in both cities and my spanish is limited.

There is a huge police presence in Cali, so I did not have any concern about thugs, or kidnappings. Although the one thing about cali that is lousy is the cabs do not have any ID inside only the sticker on the door, also they all hide the radios so they do not get stolen, so it would be very easy to unknowingly accept a ride from a rouge cab, even if you are Colombian. I would not to carry too much money, or your passport around town.

The north is loosely defined as anything north of the rio. Your best bet is to just hire a good cab driver, many of the addresses on the cali list forum are out of date unfortunately. Everyone is laid back and they will not care if you are looking for hookers, Most will go out of the way to help you since mongering is almost a a national sport in Cali.

Yesterday I got the opportunity to go to the Club Campestre located across from Unicentro in the south of Cali with some local friends of mine. Actually, I was with a group of 22-25 year old Calenos when I went to Escoces and they told them there was a cover, and there was another group of Calenos waiting out front with one of them inside seeing if it was worth all of them paying the cover, so either you were the exception, their policies have changed, or you are just full of shit. Either way, as a bar owner myself, I COMPLETELY agree with an establishment charging either small cover or larger minimum consumption to keep out the cheap riffraff.

As for Flores Frescas, there were no other gringos in there the night I went, and it is more expensive than Escoces, but only slightly so. However, there are benefits from finding a chica in this place. First of all, the girls are required to submit an HIV and other STD test every 15 days, and their pussies are subject to an up close and personal visual inspection at the will of the management. However, with sensible precautions you should be fine: no ostentatious displays of wealth (gold watches etc), don't get drunk if you're on your own, be very careful with the taxis.

The taxis are particularly dangerous. However, if you're staying at a hotel you can get them to recommend a taxista for you. Get his number and you'll have a safe ride all night.

I'm not advising you against going. You should go. Just be aware of the risks and mitigate against them.

Cali is still one of the rawest dangerous cities in Colombia besides Buenaventura, You really need to keep your guard up and keep a high level of "street smarts" Stay OUT of the bad areas, try to walk in lit areas, dont be flashy, travel in groups, CALL taxis, go to the ATM with armed guards. If you get a hooker and take her to your apartment, be careful MOST steal and you will be light a cologne, digital camera, ipod or something similar in the morning, I promise you. Get home and hide your shit or put all your shit away in the safe if you have one.
