Airport to trolley shuttle
Hi guys,
I will be flying into SAN then trolley down to the border.
Can anyone tell me how this works and now long does it take.
Or is there a better way?
I don't know why no one has mentioned it but there is a shuttle called the airport flyer #992 that will take you to the trolley station. The cost of the shuttle will count towards the fare you pay to go to the border.
Airport to border- Bus/then trolley
The terminals are serviced every 15 minutes or so (depends on day and time of day-- schedule well posted at bus stops) by #922. You use to be able to buy a $2. 50 ticket that transferred to trolley all the way to San Yasidro, but now you need to buy a $5. 00 "day pass" Tell the driver you want to go to the trolley and he/she will make sure you get off at the AMERICAN PLAZA. Cross the street to the trolley station--(just hold on to the day pass in case you get checked by transit police) and wait for the Blue line south to San Yasidro. They also come about every 15 minutes and usually run very much on the posted schedule.
Take the trolley to the end of the line and cross over the freeway by taking the winding stairs to the entrance gates to Mexico on the west side of the freeway.
This whole area is safe (IMHO) with border guards wandering and cameras, but you do need to keep your wits about you. It is kind of a hassle/walk climbing the ramp/crossing over the freeway and back down. There is a easier way-- many locals and frequent crossers do this:
At IRIS Station (station before last stop to border) get off and take the bus to the border that will drop you off right in front of the gate to mexico, thus avoiding hoof crossing over the freeway. I cannot remember what route number it is, but ask one of the drivers waiting at the station-- this is a major bus/transfer point and very safe and lighted. Your day pass will cover you for this leg as well..-
Coming back- just buy a day pass for $5 coming out the customs door, hop on the trolley and get off at American Plaza stop. Walk to bus stop in front of "Starbucks" and wait for the #922 to airport- about every 15minutes.
I do this all the time and it usually takes me about 1. 5 hours to get from airport to Zona and once through customs about 1. 25 hours to airport. The big variable coming back is time through customs which varies greatly on time of day and day. I usually cross Sunday afternoons which during normal season takes about one hour to cross, but lines can be huge during XMAS.
Late night trolleys stop around midnight I think? Or they for sure drop in frequency. This might not be a safe time to be traveling around anyway. I usually like to be crossing the border before 9pm.
Hope this info helpful.
