The convenience there is you don't have to transfer to another trolley. But Old Town Station is further away from San Ysidro than the airport is (north) so it's not necessarily clear that you'd save time given that the Old Town Flyer takes you in the opposite direction of San Ysidro. Maybe you do save a little bit of time depending on the time of day you travel and the amount of time you have to wait to transfer. If you are using the Pronto card (instead of cash), the cost of going to Old Town Station vs. Taking the bus downtown to American Plaza is the same since the transfer from the bus to the trolley is free with the Pronto card.

I've done the taxi ruta to Centro several times even with luggage and never had issues. You would just tell the driver or the worker standing there that you have luggage and they'll put you on a taxi ruta that can accomodate you. They expect double fare if you bring luggage though, so it would be 20 pesos instead of 10. (I usually just give them $2 instead of the usual $1 I give them if I'm paying in dollars which is actually a bit more than that.).

Plans fell through with a girl I was going to meet up with and was going to cancel my trip altogether until the next time our schedules synced up but decided to head out anyway and see if I could find something interesting. There is also a large amount of shark sightings prompting beach closures as well.
