Arrived early Monday morning into Bangkok from Manila and went straight to my Bangkok hotel. Was thinking of going out for an initial FL girl at Climax but stayed in room, watched som The Wire episodes and crashed instead.

Has anyone ever receive fake money from the money changers? Two of my friends who have been to Thailand quite a few times have 2 different view. One person said that he always go to the bank to exchange money even though they don't have favorable rate because he said that he had received fake money from money changers before. The other friend said that he have been going to Thailand for 10 years, always used money changers and have never received a fake bill.

I told them that I would post the question on the forum and see what the experts here's experiences have been.

I've never been given a counterfeit baht since I hardly ever use a money changer. Instead, I get my bahts from an ATM. So far, I haven't been given any counterfeit as change which is probably how most counterfeit gets into circulation. It happened to me in Argentina when a cab driver gave me counterfeit $$ as change.

I read somewhere that the most counterfeited money is the Chinese Yuan. From the country that counterfeits everything, I guess that isn't a real surprise.

So much for using money changers since they are suppose to be everywhere in Bangkok.

I have only been to Thailand once a few years ago so I don't know how to tell a real bill vs a fake bill.

Honestly, unless one is changing huge amounts the difference is not worth to walk too far to change money.

The money is a non-issue. If it was an issue then you would see it posted everywhere. I have never received fake money that I have known about. I bring cash, change it over, then put it into my Thai account. I think if you did receive fake bills then it would be in the 100 baht denomination, which is only over US$3. And you won't receive a stack of them at the same time. Like Yujin said it might be one mixed in with some change you receive. So each time your friend uses the ATM he is paying the $5 the Thai bank is going to charge him plus the money his bank is going to charge him. He will actually save money if he opts to receive a couple of counterfeit bills from money changers instead.

I am not worried about getting fake 100B but about the fake 1000B at the money changers. I will be bring cash and will be changing about US$2000 in Bangkok. I never saw anything on the forum about fake money which is why I never gave it a second thought until one friend told me that he had gotten fake 1000B at a money changer. This was the reason why I ask if anyone here have ever received fake money at a money changer.

Unlike, say, Myanmar, Bali or Venezuela, you don't have to go into a back room or somebody's jewelry shop to exchange money. There is no black market, it's all above board. The odds of getting fake bills this way are extremely small.

The 1, 000B bill has a silver metallic stripe and a sort of holographic watermark. Look at one. Many times when you pay with one the clerk will do the same. Those are really hard to fake. Check the bills and, if it's there, you're OK.
