if I take an SLR camera out into the streets am I basically asking to get robbed? it's too big to fit in a pocket so i'd be carrying a camera bag until I whipped it out
I really want to get some pictures of the people but if I don't make it back with my camera there's not really any point is there
You probably wont get your camera stolen. But think about this, I was sitting at the market this morning having breakfast and a tourist toting a big camera got within 4 feet of an old toothless khmer guy who looked like he had had a rough life just sitting minding his own business. How would you feel if someone made you out to be something of a curio something strange to be photographed.
It was really rude and cruel. My girlfriend told me that some of the people get really angry at this and rightfully so.
So please be respectful and do unto others as you would have them do to you.

Yes I've travelled a bit and I'm aware of this. I'd also just feel too awkward standing there pointing a camera at someone. That's why I bought a lens with a very big zoom; I can take the same shots from across the street.

Your camera is safe (assuming you are walking and taking pics daytime) as nite is a whole different story. Rather than hanging the camera out for all to see, I usually put it in a bag and take it out when I need to.
Also, best to ask permission before taking a close up of people as most will be happy to do so, I usually show them the pic after I take it on the camera screen and they are happy to see it.
Pics taken from across the street and farther away (not close ups of people) are never a problem.

At daytime you should be safe IMO.
But to be honest I haven't been to PP for 5 years or so.
Don't know about any changes in safety there.
I was there many times between 2002 and 2005 always with DSLR,
at a time when DSLR's weren't that common as today,
Fuji S2Pro and later Nikon D2X, and especially the Nikon is quite a big cam.
Never had any problems.
Take care!
Of course I am drunk half the time-its a free world isn't it?
Yeah that explains a lot. Well like I said, obviously we disagree, so that's that. I guess if I get any more of these foaming at the mouth PM's I'll just ignore them knowing they're probably just you re-reading old PMs again while you're drunk and itching to fight. Oh that Philistine, there he goes again. In the PM you sent over a month ago, you ordered me to never PM you again. So then I get this one from you a few days ago, again with this out of control hostile tone, name-calling. Sorry, dude, it's just bizarre. Chill out. Stick to what you do well, commenting on the scene. Nobody wants to find this kind ofcrap in their inbox.

Thanks guys. I'm hopefully going to take some pics today.
On my first cambodian girl:
She didn't shower before. Not surprisingly, when I took her shorts off she smelt pretty off down below. After the first fuck I told her she needed to shower. She said "no, you shower, I cold" and then fell asleep. After the second fuck still no shower. Going to have to lather my groin with anti-fungal cream today.
In spite of that, she was gorgeous, and the beauty being so exotic meant that I spent a lot of the time just staring at her. There's something about brown bodies that really does it for me. Would like to see her again but the lack of hygiene will probably dissuade me.
On Sharky's:
First place I went to in Phnom Penh. Definitely some lookers here, and I can be picky. Got there when it was still mostly empty and had a meal. When it filled up a bit, two 40ish hags were the first to approach me. The one in particular just stayed next to me and wouldn't leave until I stopped looking at her or responding when she asked me things. Another fairly attractive girl sat down and asked if I was scowling because of the two hags hanging all over me and she sort of saved me from them and we talked for quite a while. Was going to take her out. She quoted me $30 for short time. I asked what short time meant and she said "1 time". She wouldn't budge much from that, and I started to lose interest. Then she started answering a text from some other guy while I was sitting there with her. She actually asked me to type out the response for her to get the English correct. So I'm sitting there texting one of this girl's clients for her. What a turn on. I suspect she just wanted to rush out a boom boom with me and be ready to meet her regular client afterwards. Completely lost interest. Left.
Would go back and hopefully will attract some better girls.
On Heart of Darkness:
Great place to hang out, even if you're not looking for a girl, though it needs to be doubled in size. Plenty of lookers here too.
One thing I did notice is that a lot of the girls seemed a bit aggressive/violent. Like shoving each other or yelling and shrieking and falling over. Was a definite change in mood after being around quiet Thai girls for the past month. Though I guess it makes sense that Cambodian girls would have an edge to them given the country they live in. Also I wondered if a lot of them weren't on drugs? I saw some pretty hazy eyes, and it would explain some of the falling over behavior. Could have just been drunk maybe.
On Shanghai:
Again some very attractive girls here, but it seems this is more of a hostess bar. I got all doe-eyed for one girl in particular, and when I asked her about leaving she said I had to spend about $15 or $16 on drinks and then maybe she could go to heart or darkness with me after shanghai closed. No thanks. She then asked if she could go with me anyways because she wanted to use me to make some guy she had a crush on jealous. No, thank you.
No reason to go back. Pretty girls aren't so pretty if they're unavailable.
On Cyrcee:
Well this was a bit different. Get mobbed on walking in by 6 or 7 girls rubbing me and basically the entire bar was staring at me for a good 10 minutes. Was not expecting that and it turned me back into a nervous teen for a bit. In most places I prefer to lurk a while and do some due diligence observing the girls interacting with clients and each other so I can find one with a good hearted attitude.
Since I hadn't really responded to the swarm at the beginning, most of the girls stopped paying attention to me except a couple that I didn't really like. Also I couldn't figure out what the procedure is for this place, what happens upstairs, and whether you can take the girls out. No one there explained it to me either. The girl I wanted the most was a bartender. Half the girls looked like they could easily land me in jail, though I'm not making any accusations because it's hard to tell. Seeing cute tiny girls who look 14 and 15 being groped by old creepy french guys can sadden you a bit.
On Phnom Penh:
Filthy, vile shithole. Yet strangely intriguing. When I was in central europe I couldn't tell a genocide had taken place there, but in cambodia you can really feel it. I'm constantly tense and on edge here. Thailand seems like an immaculate first world paradise in comparison.

Just put the girl in the shower and wash her next time!

A lot of the girls who do the walkabout-sharky-martini-heart circuit are on yaba / ice indeed. I like them like that but one has to be constantly careful dealing with those girls, they go nuts quite easily. And obviously they tend to try and steal your stuff if you give them the opportunity.

The boss there (if it's still the same) is very helpful and keen on giving advice about his bar and the scene in general. Of course that means that you would have to talk to a French guy.

PP Info
Evianist, a guy I know wrote a submission for the Stickman site back in July 2009 and it contains a lot of good info about PP, from places to stay, good restaurants, prices for transportation and of course the going rates for the ladies. It was actually written in response to another submission, where the guy overpaid for everything.
If you or anyone else would like the link then feel free to PM me and I will send it to you.
I haven't been to PP since 2005, and I'm sure things have changed, but the best looking lady I had the whole time I was there was found in Sharky's. One more thing, always ask to see a ladies ID before taking her "home. " If she doesn't have one, then move on.

Interesting. That explains their behavior then.
I think the girl I had took money out of my wallet. Unfortunately for her I carry a dummy wallet filled with some leftover Argentinian pesos. Good luck trying to find an exchange booth in Asia that will take those.

Thanks I found the submission. And I will start checking IDs.
I paid $20/LT for the first girl I got, and would not pay $30/ST or $15 for drinks at Shanghai, so it seems I've been doing OK in my first few days. Getting ripped off really annoys the shite out of me, not because of the money but more because of the personal insult of it.

PP January2101
Hi Guys,
I benefitted from info here before my trip but regrettably don't have much to give back since I got a very bad gastro that has laid me low for a month. I suspect I got it after licking a Khmer girl's asshole...first time for everything!
Anyhow before then did the usual haunts but nothing particularly new to report - CirCee was a good as was a place on the corner near there called Salome (I think). Took a few girls upstairs from both, good honest service, no attempt at wallet rip offs and friendly girls. But then was stuck down and sex was the last thing I was thinking of.
Apologies I can't offer more by way of a report.

I agree.

I have the dosh, but I will not throw it around like a *******! Stick to your guns and have a good time, I like the fact that you paid $20 LT in 2010, same as I did in 2005.
I might have to revise my travel plans to include a stop in PP.
No reason to go back. Pretty girls aren't so pretty if they're unavailable.
In its day Shanghai was a great bar, but you're right about it now. Pretty much a waste of time and money.
I also know what you mean about Cyrcee, especially if it was your first time. They come on way too strong. Talent isn't what it used to be but there's still the occasional nice girl. One trick is to buy one girl -- any girl -- a drink right away, just to get the others to leave you alone. Then you can check out the rest at your leisure.
Getting rid of the hags/uglies/druggies at Sharky's is a skill in itself. You just have to ignore them, almost to the point of rudeness. Finding quality here can mean waiting for hours, so I find it's a much better place to go with friends than alone.
On Phnom Penh: Filthy, vile shithole.
It's Beverly Hills compared to the way it was back in the early 1990s!

ok so a few observations of my own from seeing pp again for the first time in a couple yrs.
martini. a bit less active and interesting than when i'd been there in the past. one thing i tuned into this time was how certain girls would enter for what seemed like a few minutes, then disappear out the front door for awhile (half an hour?), then reappear, then disappear again. pretty frustrating when it happens to be a girl you have your eye on, and you're waiting for her to stand still for a second so you can approach her. but in general, where martini used to go on throughout the night and if you waited long enough, something new would eventually walk in, these days it seems to have a clear peak at about 10-11pm, and by 12 most of the talent is gone for good.
104 st and 136 st. i'm not sure what the deal is with these places. they seem to have siphoned off a lot of the talent from the martini/walkabout/sharky circuit from what i can tell, and not in a good way. are these girls able to leave and go with you? or do they need to wait til their bar shuts? what i know for sure is that they won't all go with you, so i wonder around what % do. i walked into one on 104 and a cute khmer grabbed me as i entered and was extremely flirtatious and touchy. problem was that soon she seemed to be doing it as kind of a show for her friends. after buying her a drink and enduring her loud attention for awhile, i hit her with the question only to find out she 'has blood today'. thanks honey. i'm really glad i spent the last few minutes of bar-open time with you.
one of the free magazines (bayon pearnik or canby or that other new small one) talk about how these bars have 'brought thailand style bar culture with bar fines' to cambodia. unless i'm missing something, that's false. can you barfine girls at these bars? also, are there some bars that are less likely to "have blood today" or whatever excuse they'll give? the idea of going from one of these bars to the next paying for drinks at each one just on the chance a girl i'm talking to might be able to go to my hotel, but not before 2am... well... it's a pretty stupid setup if that's how it is.
heart of darkness. the one i had my eye on at martini disappeared and never returned. someone told me they all move on to hod at midnight. i went there and saw a lot of the same ones from martini. but where some of these girls had given me the eye earlier at martini, here they'd give the cold look-away to signal "not interested". i'm mid-40s and older than most of the guys at heart, so i assumed it had to do with face issues at hod due to the younger crowd. excellent.
luxury world massage. i took a quick peek at this fishbowl, did not ask about pricing. there weren't any faces in the crowd that made me feel like i needed to try it. overall it looked like a very ordinary-looking group of girls, not one in there who looked do-able (tho i'm a bit picky). i've heard there is also paris hotel fishbowl, any more?
circee: seems ok but when i was there many of the girls had on blue jeans. for me, blue jeans are half a step down the spectrum from chastity belts, just deprive you of 50% of the girl. maybe even worse: at least with chastity belts you can see/touch their legs. to make matters worse, the top looker by far in the place works as lead bartender and can't be touched. the touchables are mostly midgets who pale in comparison. i assume this french manager knows what he's doing, he's been at it so long, but to have the cutest girl there off limits, it really makes you look at the rest and feel disappointed. and the blue jeans. c'mon man. france practically invented sexiness. where's your sense of patriotism.
in contrast to previous visits, the places on 63 and 154 are now beckoning me in as i pass. haven't looked inside. last time i tried one i lost my pants, literally. got em back, but.. not exactly the kind of thrill i was after.
