I see a lot of hand wringing & cursing about these transportation methods & criminal actions in general.
I think its important to apply a little zen to all this instead of getting high blood pressure about it all.
I know jeepney's are not safe for westerners to travel on unaccompanied so I don't do it. I don't fret about it.. its just part of the world I live in.
I know trikes in Angeles are charging P70 for a ride that should be P7 elswhere. I don't use them unless it is convenient. I enjoy walking from fields to the SM Mall or along the streets. I dont get friggin ulcers about it..
I use taxi's in Manila a lot, I know Taxi's occasionally overcharge me there even when I tell them clearly 'I am not a tourist' clearly in Tagalog. I don't fly into a rage about it.. I just take note & avoid them If I see them again.
Native Filippinas get treated like this also, you tourists are not unique, just more likely to be uninformed.
Just keep your eyes & ears open, learn form your experiences, build up a mental map of how to get around without too much hassle & enjoy your stay!

First time posting, long time reading. Was in AC just last month and am going back next week. Here is what I found:

The place was safe.

I had more sex than I could handle.

Every girl I met just wanted to have fun and fuck.

Every rumour I had ever heard about the PI was true. (and then some)

I met as many non BF girls as I did BF girls.

I haven't fucked that much since I was in High School.

Unfortunetly, after reading these posts I realize the place was not Disneyland and now my reality is shattered. It is kind of a bummer when you learn the truth. Like when you first learn there is no Santa Claus. One girl I hooked up with and exchanged emails just asked me for help (money) because her kids were sick, she was sick, couldn't work, etc. Bummed me out.

Also signed up for filipinaheart.com and now I find out that all those girls are pros and scammers. Even the sweet and innocent looking ones! Right now my buddy just backed out of going back to AC because of funds, but I still have my ticket. I am wondering if I should even go alone? Let me know guys I need some moral support.

I have learned a hard and painful lesson when dealing with Filipinos. Remove all emotion. Go there... fuck and go home. As for sending money...Forget it. The requests will never stop. Don't even start.

If you are the marrying type stay away from the bars and look for one who is educated and making her own dough. In most cases her salary will be small compared to western standards and she will still feel as if she has some "debt" to her family but she won't be looking for a handout right way....

About going and or going alone. I have found traveling alone to be great. Last time I went mongering co-workers you had guys talking behind the other guys back. He is in with the "hookers" etc... I carry a wallet, but it is an extra and doesn't have any critical cards -- maybe an extra phone load card.

Not carrying a wallet would be too troublesome for me. If you have bills wadded up in your pockets, you'll end up dropping some of those.

Like Gamahucher, lost a wallet on an AC jeepney. We were crammed in tight and the guy to the right of me kept squirming. He couldn't have done it, so I suspect he had an accomplice to the right of him who reached his arm around the back. I was back in action pretty quickly, but I still would rather blow money on women and booze rather than lose it to sleezeballs.

Get a wallet with a chain and tie your cell to your pants. Sure they can cut them but it's one extra step. Keep both on the same side of you and make sure that side is always gaurded by your girl, a buddy, or the back wall of the jeep. I know well over a hundred expats currently living here and have met at least a thousand tourists over the past 6 years and can count on my fingers the bad experiences I've heard first hand, internet doesn't count unless I've met them personally.

As far as seeing girls taking trikes, a lot come from areas not within walking distances to the main roads to take the jeeps, especially if they are dressed for work. The "other" girls you see paying full fair can afford it:Moneykos!

I beg to differ. I met online - then in person - a bunch of nice girls on Filipina Heart. You need to find a way to separate the wheat from the chaff. I personally leave my wallet in my bags or carry it in my front pocket. I have found money belt useful. Best trick my father taught me was to put a large rubberband around your wallet or wad of bills. The rubber creates friction with your pants and it is not easily slipped out.

Thanks guys for the responses. I am the marrying kind. However, I am not above sport fucking. I went to AC because we had a contact there to show us around and tell us what to do. Now I have 3 or 4 different girls on FH that want me to come down to Manila. I am in the Army stationed in Korea, so getting to PI is cheap, but not easy. My command would no way support going there alone. So, if I did, I would be breaking some rules.
