Phnom Penh

well, on saturday night, martini actually had fewer girls (and most of the hot ones didn't show up) but also a big pack of japanese who came and scooped up most of what was acceptable. i next went up to casa disco where i'd read that the working girls there would be easy to spot cuz they all dance together in the middle of the dance floor. at 11.30pm, the middle of the dancer floor (along with every other part of it) was completely empty and just a few normal customers rep001tered around the club. totally dead, at peak time on saturday night. later i went to a bar on 136 and talked awhile with a girl, finally popped the question just to get the standard "blood today" response -- she asked if i would come back tomorrow (which might also be part of the standard script: i was asked the same thing in that bar on 104 a few nights ago after getting the "blood today" excuse, but then my reply was no, i won't come tomorrow.) so this time i followed up and asked her why, and she said she could go with me tomorrow. ok then, this might be something. (or else it might be another part of the standard script) so tonight i'll go there at the appointed time and see if it pans out or whether it was just a slight-of-hand move to try to get a decent tip out of the situation. honestly i have a gut feeling my odds are around 40-60. i half expect either she won't be working or else she'll still have blood. on the other hand, it could be she already had to go meet a customer last night so had to use the blood excuse for that reason. we'll soon find out.

ended the night at hod, which was absurdly packed and sweaty, with far far more foreigners than on other nights, the dance floor much more expanded and active, and fewer working girls in amongst the crowd than on previous nights.

i'm the kind of guy who won't take a girl unless she's striking in some way. i've gone out here 3 nights now and have gone home alone every night. i've been tempted just a few times but haven't been able to close the deal for one reason or another (girl disappeared, girl quickly scooped up by japanese guy, blood today, cold look-away, etc.)

guys this place has fallen off a cliff in terms of quality. there used to be too many options here. now there's practically nothing.

btw, i can say that i haven't seen any girls that looked **** to me in any of these places i've checked out. i always ask the girls' age when i talk to them and the lowest age i've heard so far is 20.

Don't bother. You're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've always stayed at 20-30$ places and the girls have never been asked to show an ID.

The reason that there are fewer working girls on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the heart is that they have to pay $3 entrance fee. A girl can go in for free if she is with a guy but a guy can only take in one girl this way. The $3 ticket is remediable for drinks though so its not all bad if you want to take more than one girl in. However this does cut back the number of free working girls in the place on the weekends.

In cambodia I have eaten as well as anywhere else in southeast Asia, especially in Phnom Penh - so many fantastic eating options there.

It's possible to eat badly in PP but even the smallest amount of research will lead you to very good food indeed. We all have our complaints about the country but food shouldn't be one of them.

I guess it's a matter of taste then. I don't consider burgers and fries as good food. In Thailand I eat Thai 99,99% of the time, in Cambodia I don't eat Khmer.
The only half decent meals I have had in Cambodia were Western food and cost 10$ up. For this price I can eat in my home country.

Interestingly this is my complaint number 1 about Cambodia!

For Cambodian food I find it's best to avoid the places with pots of pre-made food (unlike in Thailand, where they can be great). But go to almost any place that's filled with locals and does cooked-to-order dishes and the food can be every bit as good as Thai. The only problem is that at the authentic places there's never an English menu so if you don't speak Khmer you have to do some pointing at other people's plates. The tourist-oriented places are generally crap.

I know dozens of good Khmer cafes'. Maybe it takes living here to discover them.

Perhaps an unnecessary soap box here but there seems to be a lot of discontent posted about various aspects of PP. FWIW I often tell friends I think 90% of the guys that go to Thailand probably wouldn't like PP. PP isn't anything like walking into a GoGo on Walking Street, buying a couple of lady drinks and then bar fining. The scene takes a little more effort, like most everything in Cambodia, but once you get settled in it can be a lot of fun. So if you want something different and a bit of an adventure come to PP. Come with an open mind that you are going someplace that works differently. But there is the possibility that it might just might not be your cup of tea. No shame in that, at least you don't have to sit and wonder what might have been.

I never learned to eat Thai food when there and I don't eat local food here (much to my discredit and probably my health). I think the barang food is good here especially along the riverfront (with the exception of beef). I find nice Barang meals all over the place for around $5 or sometimes less (before drinks). Some of the fancy places on the riverfront can cost much more. But I had a nice meal right on the riverfront last night for $5.

I have only stayed in three hotels here but have never had a girl asked for an ID. The place I'm staying now closes up at 11 PM to 1 AM and I have to knock on the gate to get the guard to open the gate. The guard doesn't give a damn. He just wants to go back to sleep. I have heard that with recent difficulties Walkabout is asking for IDs for girls that you take to you room. But I must say I don't know that for a fact. So for the most part it is up to you to make the judgment on age and keep yourself out of any possible trouble. Again this isn't (you know where). The young girls in Thailand have fake IDs or have borrowed one from their sister...

I am finally getting divorced and as a long time reader, first time traveler.

I will be making my first trip (to Vietnam and Cambodia) in 2 weeks.

Does anybody have any advice and is anybody else going to be there and want to get together?

Feeling a bit sick today, and will be staying in my hotel room watching Olympics. (Mr Shadow, please accept my rain check for meeting up! And thanks much for the invitation)

Well, as 9pm approached I did actually have the feeling that I'd been set up for disappointment. But I showed up on time, and from the look in the girls face and the way she was behaving, it did seem like she never really did intend to go through with it. Another chubby girl was sticking to us like glue, which was annoying. I brought her the name card for my hotel since she seemed to have some concern about that when we talked the previous night. She looked at it and said she didn't know the hotel. And that seemed to be what was going to be the excuse. But not sure what got said in Khmer, but suddenly I was being asked if I could pay a $10 bar fine. I agreed and next she was insisting on just one hour. It was obvious she was uncomfortable so I asked her if she was ok. Anyway, we finalized the deal and took off for my hotel. She seemed pretty shy and starfishy, but it was ok. Damage was $30 to her and $10 to the bar, and she stayed almost 2 hrs, agreed to 2 pops but I was too tired to get the last one in, let her leave.

So $40 for ST for the one you want. Not a great deal. That used to be the appeal of PP, how easy and cheap it was. Now it's hard and slightly cheaper (compared to Thailand and other SEA). I mean I know it's easy to walk into one of those massage places and pay a lot less, but... they're kind of gross, for me at least that's a turnoff, not an enjoyable experience, and you don't get much control in the situation.

Btw, I headed into this one with Plan B already in place and expecting that's what I would be doing - so it was a pleasant surprise this worked out.

Western food $10?

Surely very place on the riverside has good food with four or five dollars as does sharkies.

Unless one goes to metro or the FCC the food is good value,some here need a mum to look after them.

Went to Walkabout at around 10:30 last night.
Only saw about 5 girls and some western guys looking awkward.
By the way I got a cheeseburger from here the other day and it was the grossest thing I've ever eaten.

Went to Sharky's. Same girls as the other day.

Went to heart of darkness. Was 75% men, with about 30 available girls. The girls were giving me a lot of attention which was nice. Turned a lot of girls down.

Finally took home a 20 year old girl. You know when you take a girl and then when she gets naked you realize she's all busted up and you picked the wrong girl? This was like the opposite of that. Her breasts were either a big C or a D. Never been pregnant, not a fat girl. Good heavens what a body. Too young and inexperienced to be a good fuck, but she made up for it in other ways.
