Let me preface this post by stating I'm currently stoned and have been binge watching the new Twin Peaks series over the past couple of days. This show has me twisted.

Last Friday, I get a wild hair and contact a chica on Mileroticos. Normally, I stay away from these sites as they are usually expensive, big difference between photo vs actual, and the meet gets fucked up. She did a workmanlike routine with the CBJ, but I was disappointed in my own performance after that. Too much walking, no blue pill, wrong time of day, whatever. Here's a tip I left out that may be helpful: The best pharmacy I found on selection + prices was Drogueria Sur No. 2 at 53-113 Carrera 51. That street is the street that runs under the rail line around Parque Berrios station, and the street number is a little ways up the road in the direction of Prado station and on the same side of the road as Plaza Botero (and not a long walk at all from there). Unlike with the massage places, there is signage. They had a generic brand of the blue pill at 4 x 50 MG at COP 4200 for the box, though I went for the Genfar one with 4 x 50 MG at COP 6000 for the box. Also good prices on other stuff.

Also walked by the places on the plaza near the museum (Conejitas, etc.) and wondered about 'em. Didn't have time to check it out, alas. I guess another to-do for next time.

I'm planning my first trip to MDE and I'm looking for some advice. Note that I speak zero Spanish but I can learn some phrases before going. Anyways, after reading the forum, I've a few q's.

1. a lot of people advise staying in Poblado, specifically near Lleras Park for the first time. I saw that most casas and strip clubs are somewhat far away. Is this because of Mansion, the SGs, and safety?

2. if I want to stay near the casa area, is there a recommended mid-range hotel?

3. I hear a lot about using Facebook. I tried Googling prepagos Medellin in FB without any meaningful results, which was kind of expected. How does this work?

Hope to report back. I've only reported in Asia thus far and this would be my first Latin American country.

It will be more enjoyable and for your safety. Don't let your first trip be a bust and get hurt. Worse, be that idiot gringo that got killed.

2. if I want to stay near the casa area, is there a recommended mid-range hotel?[/QUOTE]Yes safety, the downtown Centro area (aka La Candelaria) where most the Casa's and cheaper strip clubs and redlight blocks are gets a little sketchy at night, wandering homeless and drug addicts etc. I stay there when I go but I speak fluent Spanish, lived in Central America for 5 years and a bad part of Washington DC for a year and spent a year in Kandahar Afghanistan so it seems fine to me. LOL.

I stay at the Hotel Botero for $26 a night, they have a roof top bar / sauna with a great view of the city, it's 15 story and no prob with chicas. (but rent a room for 2) Don't need cabs, 1/2 block to the indoor ATM at hotel Nutribara, 24 food and a grocery store around the corner, 3 titty-bars & 2 brothels & 2 redlight blocks within 3 blocks, WiFi sometimes in the room, always in lobby, walk in shower with hot water, clean beds, mini fridge, 42 flat-screen, not very good AC but windows open, ask for a fan, get a high floor on the west side of the building. Also a plus that the airport buses are parked in that block so $3 ride to your hotel.

You don't need Spanish to stay in Centro any more than you need it to make facebook dates. What you do need in Centro is common sense and some familiarity with urban environments. If you have one or both of those and you take reasonable precautions, you will be fine. As for hotels, there are several that cater to an international clientele and have English speaking staff. The Nutibara is one of the better known properties. Check Tripadvisor etc. For others.

I should warn you that if you stay in Centro you will not get to spend as much time with other gringos as you will if you stay in Poblado. Pick your poison, LOL!

The easy solution is to stay at The Mansion. Lack of Spanish won't be as noticeable.

1. Poblado, especially Parque Lleras, is where you'll find the most gringos. I live in Poblado and spend a lot of time in Parque Lleras. It's a safe area with plenty of entertainment options, although mongering options are somewhat limited.

2. What do you consider a midrange hotel? Midrange cost is about $30. Midrange quality is 3 stars. However, $30 in El Centro doesn't necessarily mean 3 star quality.

3. There are a few posts detailing how to get started on FB. There are pluses and minuses. As with everything, YMMV and lack of any Spanish will limit your enjoyment.

Here is an example regarding knowing some Spanish.

My Spanish is poor but improving. The hardest part is hearing what others are saying. It can be very frustrating for both parties.

This morning I met up with a very sweet Venezuelana, in my opinion a solid 9. She's educated, but knows very little English. Definitely not enough for any type of conversation. We talked, hung out, listened to music then had an unrushed, very good session. By the time she left, over 4 hours had passed.

Without Spanish, we would have spent maybe an hour and the price would have been the same. Now there are some guys who figure 4 hours should mean 4 different chicas. For me, I prefer a more complete experience.

For those who have been, would you please describe the costs associated with taking a trip out to Guatape. Please include any recreational expenses (boat rental, jet ski rental, etc), transportation to / from, food on site, etc etc. I'm also interested to know of any lodging options in the area as well as private spots to get a bang or BJ in!

Disagree with you and agree with Sbeach. Centro, except casas, is not a place for non-Spanish speaker. Non-speakers just do not see the dangers, tricks and problems.

.[/QUOTE]For the non-Spanish speaking guy, inquiring as where to stay on a first time trip; both statements above are true, the second, however, would be more prudent for a first timer.

I always recommend first time friends to the Mansion.

You will meet girls for sure, make some cool gringo contacts, and yes, maybe a couple not so cool as well, LOL.

Easily ignored.

You'll learn the the lay of the land, gain good experience and contacts for future visits.

Comprehending what's being spoken to you on the go, and even more difficult over the phone.

I'm grateful that I decided about 20 years ago to learn and speak Spanish well.

I remember the frustrations of thinking I had a grasp, only to be lost in conversations, LOL.

It's amazing though, through repetition, how your ear and mind will eventually acclimate and how you'll improve and feel at ease with the language.

The benefits of speaking the language are obviously enormous, more than non-speakers can even imagine.

Though hardcore non-speakers will and always profess here that it doesn't detract from their experience, it really does, regardless if one admits it or not.
