Impossible No, Challenging Absolutely
Lots to report so buckle your seatbelts and enjoy the ride. Full disclaimer. Most of this is regarding non-mongering activities but does have mongering implications / uses. If you are looking for a good non-pro social scene and are a senior member who has contributed to the forum, feel free to PM me and I will advise you on some great locations. But, you need to speak Portuguese or else you will not have any success.
Not too sure about being unsuccessful but it's complicated. A lot of Brazilians (non-Pros) do speak English nevertheless the problem with my dissertation is you can't tell by looking at someone. However, in my experience if you're in an environment of Middle to Upper-Class, University Students, Large Corporate (generally international or US / UK based), Mid to High End Retail, Hospitality, Service Professionals, and etc. , they do speak English and other foreign languages. The problem is do they want to speak to you?? Problem solved if you know Portuguese fluently but you're not totally out of luck if they have a desire to speak to you in English. Sure, its hit or miss but it can happen (and you may feel your wasting your time) just depends on the environment you're in. Believe me the Brazilians know who the Gringos are.
For those who are working in a large company with a Brazilian office or have a Friend who is Brazilian, connect with them. Again, this is your non-mongering time. I have had friends refer me to a Brazilians who they worked with in country while on a contract to hang with. They contacted their contact indicated I was visiting, and the contact showed me the town once I arrived. They knew or had a better idea of the locations where Brazilian patrons have likelihood of knowing ESL. (I. E. , Company X happy hour at Restaurant&bar X).
Just like in the States some people of other nationalities speak English but if you ask them a question, they indicate they do not understand you. In most cases they do not want to be bothered with you.
Haven't you been for example. The grocery store and the cashier utters something to you like "are you a frequent store discount member?" or instructions you do not understand in Portuguese to which you do not know what is being said looking bewildered and a customer in line behind steps up recognizing you don't understand and comes to your aid and translates the cashier's question or instructions?? Yes, it probably happens to everyone at some point. Would said customer if you walked up to them cold and asked a question would respond? Who knows but since you were holding up the line and their desire to get out of the store they stepped up to translate and help you so the line could start moving again. LOL.
Finally some friends and I were in Leme at Restaurante Marius Degustare and a nice looking Carioca asked my friend if he was from Texas since he had a Houston Rockets Jersey and 6'9 (probably thought he was a player) anyway she initiated contact, spoke English because she had a "desire" to converse with my friend. They did eventually exchange numbers but nothing never happened since we were flying out the next day.
