This afternoon I got to enjoy watching a botched robbery attempt. I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't the target of the attempt, but at least it didn't cost me anything.

I was walking south along the metro line, about 2 blocks north of Hotel Nutibara, on my way to Parque Berrio metro station, roughly halfway between Prado and Berrio. Just before I got to a spot where the sidewalk becomes very narrow some guy ran past me to get in front of me. At that point there should have been nobody behind me and nobody in front of me, since the guy appeared to be in a big hurry.

Just as I realized the running guy was moving very slow in front of me I noticed 2 guys closing in behind me. The guy in front stopped suddenly and dropped a lighter. He knelt down and fumbled on the ground and the other guys closed in tight. When I felt the guy trying to grab my leg, I took a big step back, got free of him and yelled at him. The guys behind weren't expecting that and ended up in front of me, facing the wrong direction with everyone in the area looking at them. They moved a little further and tried again, but I was 3 steps behind at that point.

I gave them plenty of room and got where I couldn't be closed in. After conferring for a few seconds they moved back the way they came.

During the day pickpockets are the biggest problem there. Try not to let people get too close and keep aware of your surroundings. Be safe.

I will be returning to Medellin in a few weeks and unfortunately I have a late flight. My flight doesn't land until 11:40 PM. I plan on taking a cab to my hotel and I would like to head to Parque lleras for some action. How safe is it to travel late hrs? Is Parque lleras safe late hours?

It is a very bad area even for locals let alone gringos. Also, trannies there are very malicious and they use organized tactics to assault and rob the people. The area is an anarchy, no-law zone. All the self-claimed "street savvy" gringos I knew had troubles there eventually. Overconfidence, excessive risk-taking, and ignorance will be very costly in Centro.

So I'm planning to go Medellin late December, and staying Laureles area. I found several airbnb around $40 60 range and they are chica friendly.

Hotel Dorado La 70 is $43 per night with breakfast included. Have Anyone stayed this hotel? Is the hotel chica friendly without extra charge?
