If I arrange my flights with care, I can clear immigration in the morning and be settled in my lodging a few hours later, which gives me time for a combat nap before going out on the town that evening. I'm fighting a 12-hour time difference and this helps me minimize jet lag.
Eventually Pattaya starts to feel a little small, which is the perfect time to head back to Bangkok for the last 20 percent of my trip. The girls are different and the scene is different and that prevents boredom from setting in. I'm am also much closer to the airport than I would be in Pattaya. I'm not wild about starting a 24-hour airline trip with a long cab ride up from Pattaya.
Of course, as they say on the Interwebs, your mileage may vary. Maybe you are a foodie who is dying to sample Bangkok's amazing cuisine and not so interested in the one hundred different versions of English breakfast on offer in Pattaya. Perhaps you're a clothes horse and you need to make multiple trips to your tailor to ensure everything fits just so. Or it could be you've looking to get some world class medical treatment at rock bottom prices. In which case ignore my advice and spend most of your time in Bangkok.

I spent lots of time in Pattaya my first six or seven years living in Thailand (99-06). Always a BKK resident, but Pattaya was great for one weekend a month. After three nights, I was ready to get back to BKK. Now, meh! I can't really stand the place. I find it very depressing. It is like the current Sukhumvit scene spread out over an entire city.
Want to see the dregs on holiday? Head to Pattaya. The worst the EU, the US, the former USSR, India, China, and the Middle East have to offer. And it is crowded to boot. 10 years ago you could shoot a cannon down just about any soi during low season and not hit anyone. Now, packed year around. Had the misfortune of needing to attend a business meeting there about 6 weeks ago. Had not been there in over two years. I was appalled. One night, meeting, back to BKK. Not enough money in the world to get me to live there.
Of course if all you are interested in is sex, then Pattaya is still a good place I guess, but for me seeing the least common denominator of humanity really kills the fun, no matter how "great" the girls are, and truth be told I did not see many "great" girls.
If you are interested in girls, but want good food, a nice urban environment, good coffee shops, etc, spend your time in BKK. The eye candy in BKK blows Pattaya away.

The beach is nothing special. There are lager louts in abundance, stumbling down the sidewalks clutching a giant bottle of Beer Chang, their lobster-colored flab and tribal tats on full display in a wife-beater T-shirt bearing some hackneyed aphorism or advertising. The lower rungs of the commercial sex scene are all over town and seeing those girls before breakfast is enough to put a guy off his feed. And then there are the "civilian" tourists, who arrive in their gigantic buses and toddle around Walking Street gawking at the punters like they are animals in a zoo. If you don't care for Russians or Indians or left-handed Lithuanians it's easy to cast a gimlet eye toward the riffraff and conclude the city has gone to the dogs.
But I still love the place in limited doses. With a little effort you can get off the beaten path and find a punter scene largely devoid of gawkers and civilians. On any given night there are at least a few hotties in the go go clubs on Soi LK Metro. There are diamonds in the rough in the Soi Six bars and on the Dark Side. Are the Pattaya girls up to Bangkok standards? Who can say? But when the sun sets all I need is one sweet young thing that pushes my buttons. Some nights the search is protracted, but to me looking is part of the fun. Maybe a guy who lived in Bangkok would prefer a less-involved evolution, like an after-work stop at one of the nice soapies.
When I'm not on the prowl it's just as easy to take the road less traveled. From central Pattaya you can walk east and in ten minutes find yourself in a part of town that's virtually unknown to visitors. It's far from sophisticated, but that's OK with me. I love eating at the hole-in-the-wall places and watching the locals go about their daily routine. It's not world class cuisine like you get Bangkok's upscale eateries. But it's great value for money and they don't care I'm wearing shorts or dining alone. Ditto for the hawker stalls inside the night market on Soi Buakaow. No Michelin stars for the old ladies who do the cooking, but chowing down at a communal picnic table under a bare bulb with the working girls is so different to my life in the world I find it a refreshing change of pace.
Perhaps Mr. Scot's perspective is informed by the fact that he lives in Bangkok, whereas I (very) sporadically do the Two Week Millionaire holiday. As the Bard reminds us: "If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work." If I lived full time in Thailand, I suspect Pattaya would get old fast and I too would probably gravitate toward the "nice urban environment" in Bangkok. But for the occasional holiday, I still have a soft spot for Pattaya.

Another ringing endorsement for Pattaya girls- from Goatscrot. Not. I swear my feeling is girls who can't make it in BKK go to Pattaya to give it a whirl. I don't see any evidence to the contrary.
Hint whenever someone says GEMS can be found- it means 600 baht girls a plenty. Don't waste your time waiting for the gem.
Went to R4 and Baccara. Please disregard my proposed changes to Rainbow 4. Maybe good for Golden week when they are packed or weekends during high season. Hard to tell but looked like it was half full for the hour I was there. Talent level not too good.
Baccara faces are a cut above Rainbow 4 by a million miles. Very clean cut and pretty faces. But is it me or do they seem aloof- very few smiles. Rainbow 4 girls win on personality- hands down. They seem to be having a good time just being there.

Sitting in R 4 had me contemplating my future with the girl. I think this may be the best explanation I've come up with so far. One of her co-workers came up with a plan to maximize her earnings. They are different scenes with different vibes. When I am in Thailand I like to spend time in both places. The transfer can be a bit of a PITA but it does not take too long.
Pattaya during the week (Sun-Wed) and Bangkok on weekends (Thu-Sat) are my preferences. Normally I try to spend the first few days of the trip in Bangkok, go down to Pattaya for a time, and then back to Bangkok until departure. That said; my next trip in November is 14 nights so I will probably just head directly to Pattaya for a week, and then spend 7 nights in Bangkok.

I've been there on A Friday and wasn't charged a cover. Maybe I was there too early around midnight. Stayed inside for a while then hung out outside. The terrace had a much cooler breeze. At around 3 am they opened the back area. Lots if neon lights looked more like a rave. I saw very attractive girls but I was already in hand with a 9. I would go back. Whiskey drinks were 250 bhat.

Not sure if this is true, I'm not in BKK ATM. When its all said and done, the Soi 11 along with Insanity its six half dozen or the other when it comes to talent. IMO
