I'm with Bob. It's not appropriate, within the context the the local culture, to back folks into a corner and you gain nothing from it. You embarrass them and they resent you. However, once you've established a decent relationship with a local colleague, there's a chance that he or she might accept the Western perspective, that it's perfectly acceptable to admit you don't know.
GE
I agree but I hate that when I, as a foreigner in MNL, I am wrong in cases I will admit it and if I wronged someone then I do apologize. But damn if they never seem to accept the apology and carry a grudge forever.
There is an Asst. Mgr. at a firm I work with for over 10 years now and we got into a little (and I do mean little) disagreement (with only his immediate superior and me knowing about this incident no one else) but he's carrying around a 100 ton chip on his shoulder ever since. And after I realized I was wrong, I admitted I was wrong and apologized (sincerely). Now they guy is even less productive and helpful then he was before.
Would have been easier to use local ways and not admit I was wrong and just kept on keeping on.... Usually it just does no good to work with or try to deal with a Western Perspective on anything in PI.

Help me understand her.
Need some help. how to understand Filipino girls.
I am posting this here, as maybe some of you have some advice, even though I am seeing this girl in China.
I have been seeing a Filipino in China for 1 year now. and we developed a very nice relationship. I help her out in many ways.
Although she is well educated (college, worked in Dubai for awhile.) When I am not around, I know she is a working girl. (that is how I first met her). and sometimes I joked about her going with other men when I am not there.
I was with her last weekend, and left the city and was to come back and see her Sunday and Monday. I knew she had plans to be with someone on Friday and Saturday. as I was going to come back early, but she told me she had plans. When I came back she would not answer my sms or calls. she never did this before.
Finally she answered me, and said she was still with the man. and she told me she was hurt very much by those remarks I made in the past about her getting money from other men.
WTF? just like that?
We had many open discussions in the past. and she never mentioned this. is it just an excuse? how to I get into her head?
I guess I went to far getting to attached to her. but really have enjoyed all my time with her. makes travelling to China much more fun.

Guess What's In Her Head
I've been here now for six years, and if I've learned anything at all it's that none of us will ever know, or at least will never be able to understand fully what's going on inside the heads of Filipinas. There are only two generalizations I've heard that are true more often than not.
First, many Filipinas are not very concerned with thinking about longer-term consequences. They tend to "seize the moment," and to milk it for momentary gain without worrying about whether their actions will have negative future ramifications. So Mark17, you tell her you're coming back, but that's in the future, and this guy (and whatever he can give her) are in the present, and the present is her only concern. I've often joked here that long-term planning for Filipinos is wondering what to have to dinner while eating lunch.
Second, as a long-time resident of the Philippines once told me, "there's no such thing as 'it's not personal.' Here, everything is personal." That being the case, you may have, without realizing it, offended her. Of course, rather than tell you or confront the situation, she'll internalize everything and make you suffer for a while.
My advice would be to ignore the situation and to ignore her, at least for a while.

Is fidelity possible or will they always just seize the opportunity and cheat? A friend of mine had a GF who at was a door girl at a bar who he supported but didn't spend every night with her. At 9PM told him she loved him and by 10PM she was out bar fined with some other guy. She could give no reason why she did it so he dumped her.
My GF lives in the provinces now. I support her. She swears she she has no desire for anyone else. Can I ever expect fidelity from her, or are Filipinas just opportunists that will blow a long term relationship for 30 minutes of fun? All I ever hear about is wives or husbands cheating on their spouses when their spouse is not around. Can a Filipina make a good GF or wife who would not cheat or is infidelity just part of their culture?

Dear Big Johnson,
After reading your rhetorical questions I think you already know the answers. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a province to keep a Filipina faithful. Don't feed them. Fuck them!

CM
P.S. Then fuck them some more.

Understanding Filipinas
Need some help. how to understand Filipino girls.
This reminds me of the (adapted) story when an ISG monger was deep in prayer on the side of Fields Ave Angeles City when the clouds opened above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said "Because you have tried to be faithful to me in many ways I will grant you one wish".
The monger thought carefully and said "I have a few appointments lined up in Cebu and I would love to be able to drive down there without all the hastle of taxi drivers and Philippines airlines. Can you build me a bridge to Cebu so I can drive there and keep my appointments?"
The Lord said "Hang on a sec, your request is very materialistic, and not too easy either. Think of the logistics, the techtonic plates, the depth of the water, the concrete and steel that would be needed! I can do it but it is pretty hard to justify on any sensible cost/benefit basis just for you to keep a few appointments. Why don't you take a little more time, think about it a bit more and maybe come up with a wish more worthy of both of us."
The monger (whose name I will protect) thought about it a long time. Finally he said. "Lord, I have been coming to the Phils a long time, The local Filipina are beautiful and loving, but I can't understand them 'what they are and who they are'. They have no idea of time, and gez, some of them can be butterflies! I want to know what makes them tick, what they feel inside, what they are thinking, why they express love when I havent even met them, and when I do love them they are looking to shoot out the door. I would really like to know them better and understand them."
After a few minutes God said, "You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge to Cebu?"

Just go to Phils, have a good time there. And don't ever commit yourself.
Samar
Wow....What an irony? just go to PH and have a good time and never commit..in essence what you are saying is sleep with 100 girls and lie to every single one of them that she is the one and you are a good guy and not a butterfly.
Personally, i have lied more than a filipina to get laid and i don't know how it is possible as you mention to have a good time and not lie at the same time ?
We lie as soon as we land in nino Aquino international airport, is there any other way to have fun with 100 girls month after month and not lying, keeping a straight face...can we go to a bar even with a million dollar and flash it that i'm a butterfly but i never lie ? i just can't get around that.
We are not robots, questions come up, admit it that you will be lying more than a filipina and trust me things will be much better that way around instead on falling into the trap called lier versus good guy thing.
Well, if your definition of having fun is not sleeping with 100 girls then lying is not for you...i take my words back..good luck
LOL!
And many in the west (mostly bankers and financial advisers) would much rather take your Taxpayer money than go work for themselves. I see extreme laziness based on Western Standards - go to expensive restaurants in the financial districts of the world and see how hard they work. LOL.
I hear that "I can't take that job because it doesn't pay enough" in a lot of European countries - plenty of options to study for free well into the thirties without student loans, plenty of unemployment benefits. Lots of people letting US Taxpayers work themselves silly instead of working themselves.
In the west we are lucky that we had an industrial revolution two hundred years ago that gave us a head start....but the rest of the world is catching up - because WE are lazier than they are.
Well said, it amazes me how soon we forget our background as soon as we land in PH.....somehow, we feel, we have been giving the authority to rule here and no one should lie to us and that everything should be perfect etc...ha
I don't know why people get a false sense of pride when they are coming from west, they have nothing going for them, low population growth, higher crime rate, bitchy women, drugs, inflation, crumbling economy, corrupt government, china up in their a*ss taking all there jobs.
Get this....They will suck up the billions of bail out tax payers money handed out to corrupt banks in the open day light, flashed across the world, plain fu*cking robbery in day light by banksters and they will just whine and complain....We are talking here about ones own hard earned money taken literally in front of their own f*ucking eyes and given to banks and nay nothing..just ranting and complaining.
And when these same folks land in the PH or Asia...they turn their color and complain left and right...ohh how corrupt they are...women lie, taxi over charge, roads are not clean, is it safe out here....etc etc....at a time, when a while ago...they got screwed by their own people..that is ok with them but not the few dollars they get short changed now and then...which is common in every part of the world even with that...they get a better deal here than they would back in their own country.
Its just crazy

Bl5. Point well taken, however there is no need to justify my actions to anyone or any of the girls. I always make it a point not to barfine more than one girl from the same bar in order not to give the impression that I am a butterfly. He. He. And believe me that I never tell them stories and promise them anything to get them perfoming. A white lie once in a while really doesn't hurt anyone.
Regarding commitment, I commit myself once I have payed the barfine and a handsome tip in the morning. And they commit themselves by providing sexual pleasure. I call the colors the way I see them and never promised them marriage in order for me to get laid.
Yes BL5, I consider myself as a good guy, because I look after the girls that I am with for the duration of my trip.
I am not sure if you know that, but do you know that a great majority of these girls have a pinoy BF which they support and all their bad habits, like drinking, gambling, etc?. And also some of the girls go to videoke bars full of pinoys, buying them drinks and at the end of the night they sleep with them for nothing? Just for the shear pleasure of getting bonked by a low life. Can you tell me who's lying now.
Your critisism is well taken BL 5 and everyone has his own opinion regarding financial transactions.
I wish you also good luck in your ventures.
Samar.

They ask me, "where are you honey " Answer, I'm in a business meeting. (In Sogo)
They ask me " Can I see you tonghit ". Sorry baby, my boss arriving and have a meeting with him. (meaning I'm seeing another one)
They say " honey, you said we could be together all day, who you have to leave so soon after sex" I reply, need to get my door fixed, typhoon damaged it. (meaning I'm bored with you. Want to hunt a new one.
They say "Will I see you again" I say Of course, you are hot and would love to see you again. (meaning thanks honey, but you and me will never be naked in same room again.
I suspect these are amongst the most common if the leis we all tell.

And yet, the worst day I ever had in the Phils is better than the best day I had anywhere else. It is instructive for expats especially to go back to their own countries every now and again to remind themselves why they came to the Phils (or LoS etc etc). Spend a couple of weeks back home where the Fat White Cows expect you to fall over in gratitude after you have spent a fortune in time and money for a very very average shag, and in hotels that charge twice as much for half as much. Most people then re-evaluate their thoughts. Of course if, after going back to the FWCs at home, you still think it is better there, you can stay and be happy.
