I think it's best for those who have long stays or have been to Rio several times, to go take a look.
If a newcomer on his first or second trip really, really wants to check it out, it's certainly an adventure. Don't go with high expectations. Many of us checked VM off our list years ago. Been there, done that.

Sometimes I stay 5 minutes, sometimes 5 hours. Depends on the vibe.
I speak pretty good portuguese, and like a lot of guys, pretty good at dando papo (chit chat).
It may be a bottom of the barrel area, but damn have I found some stunners and unspoiled (like Terma types can be) girls there.
We all roll differently in the hunt.

I had some great sessions with the usual suspects at centro termas. It's like groundhog day, but it never gets old. Jimmyboy is a great wingman. Thursday we did niteroi which is recommended just for the views on the boat. I failed to do enough advance recon of GPArena, so we just hit a few prives, which are much more conservative than the Rio counterparts.

I tend NOT to wallow in either for too long and keep an "even keel" as best I can.

One of the long term challenges of living in Rio for a retired Swiss naval intelligence officer with broken time in the Swiss Guard who relocated to Dallas Texas is finding long term friends.
