I used to live in San Diego in the 90's and crossed the border many times in those days, but fast forward to 2024, and I live in Colombia. I really don't get to the West Coast anymore, but I have to get some training in SD with a freaking two week interval between sessions! My plan to save some money during that time is to get a hotel in Tijuana and cross the border daily into San Diego to take care of some business. I have Global Entry. Do I need a visa to stay in Tijuana that long and will crossing back and forth be a issue? Obviously when they see a big bag there will be questions. Any help is appreciated!

1.Mexican Tourist Card (FMM). (180 days stay)

The tourist card is free if your stay in Mexico is 7 days or less and you are traveling by land into Baja (see below). Otherwise, the card which you can get right in the immigration desk if you walk in, or past the check point in an office if you drive in, costs $717.00 pesos (appx USA $43) and will be issued for up to 180 days.

However, the official note is that they say you should return the FMM everytime you leave Mx. My unofficial understanding is that you can use it to return into Mexico via Tijuana as long as it has not expired. I did it multiple times before, (Others please comment on this part).

2. Mexican Tourist Card (FMM). (1 week stay)

The tourist card is free if your stay in Mexico is 7 days or less and you are traveling by land into Baja. Otherwise, the card costs $717.00 pesos (appx USA $43) as stated above and may be issued for up to 180 days.

The official requirement is that you have to get this every time you walk or drive into Mexico and you are staying less than 7 days in the Tijuana area. They will stamp your passport before they give you the paper for the 7 day visa. My unofficial experience is they never asked me to get this visa at all nor they stamped my passport, since the pandemic. Heck sometimes I just walk in without even being checked for ID or passport.

It'll be my first time but I have RTFF for years. Just need tips for best route and timing.

Only want to go to HK. Should I Uber or take HK transport?

Is HK busy on a Sunday am. Hoping for a decent selection but if not just want to get an arriba and see how far $1 bills can take me in the club.

Can you smoke a cigar inside as well? Never seen that referenced.

Also is the border busy Sundays afternoon back into USA. ? Wanted to get back before it closes at 2.

Uber works very well but they are not appreciated at the border as taxis consider this, their territory.

They are cracking down on smoking so check first as rules are changing.

Better be prepared with some ficha money, as soon as a girl approaches you, there will magically appear a mesero.

I have found the border to be busy and dead on sundays, there is some realtime border wait times you can follow.

[/QUOTE]I, too, have used the 180 day visa to enter Mexico multiple times, without returning it upon exit. But I had recently seen posts in the forum about this being disallowed. So, last week when I got my latest visa I specifically asked the immigration officer whether it could be used to enter multiple times within the 180 days, and he said yes. Of course, this is Mexico, so we'll see what happens when I try to use it to re-enter, LOL. Where did the "official" info come from that you're supposed to return the visa when you leave Mexico?

When I crossed the border the immigration were issuing the one day FMM visas. They simply looked at my passport and told them I was only going for the evening. Seems like the immigration people crack down for awhile & ease up after awhile It is reasonable for them to scan your passport. But seems like a waste of time to issue the one day visas. I haven't been to Tijuana in 7 years and have decided to split my vacation between Mexico city (first visit) and Tijuana (where I've had a lot of fun on 5 previous visits).

Where do you stay who don't want to spend so much money on a hotel in Tijuana? I have 4 nights (Saturday to Wednesday) and am considering either booking a single room at Hotel Sascadas ($90/ per night) but think it's a bit expensive. With the vip card I can get a discount on Tuesday night and there is still a discount if I book an appointment with a girl, right? But there are possibly other more affordable and decent rooms near HK that the girls accept to visit? So that I can maybe save some money and not have to pay for the HK room on an hourly basis?

Vip card: I was promised to be picked up at the border when I had the vip card last time, but no one came to the agreement. It ended up that I also took my own taxi to the border on departure. I have a bit of a bad experience, but it may have improved.

Do they have any service to / from the airport?

I can understand that many people think it's cool to have such cool suites on offer, with a strip bar and a club atmosphere, but I'd rather spend the money differently.

I fly in from Europe and here we have euros. Should I exchange and bring dollars or can I get by with Mexican currency?

Suggestions are gratefully received.

Interesting, I haven't seen many visitors from Europe. Since you're going into CDMX, I'm not sure if it'd be better to just work in pesos. The meseros and bar girls in HK and so on will definitely be expecting you to be paying USD. I've read / experienced myself that pesos are better outside of the club when dealing with street girls, stores and everything else.

I personally recommend getting a double room + vip card especially if you'll be here on a Saturday to Wednesday. Single use rooms in HK are $40 so if you plan on banging more than one girl a night, you'll immediately recoup the loss. I would probably Uber or Didi from the Tijuana airport to Hotel Cascadas.

And on a side note, did you mean Nov 16 or December 16? I saw you were staying on a sat. Wed and Nov. 16 is a Saturday.

I asked the lady that gave me the 7 day visa last Monday and she confirmed this.

However, if you leave Mexico via airplane and sea ports they will ask you for it, and collect that before you board off. Yes this is a requirement. If you don't have it, they will check your passport to verify whether you have had a visa stamped on it at entry and they also want to stamp you out. If you don't have a Book passport with you then you could be delayed until the immigration officials verify whether your entry had been legal and no criminal activity was reported. It is not a good idea to not have your FMM at exit. It is also a good idea to return it to have your exit registered.

Tijuana and some border areas are exempt from these requirements as long as you stay within these cities. For example if you don't have a FMM visa and cops stop you and they find out, you won't have much trouble on it so long as you are in the Tijuana area. If you are caught without a visa in the inter-lands you could be arrested for verification.

The re usage of the FMM on re entry is also localized only to these border cities. Both the 7 day and 180 days FMMs can be used when you walk back into Mx as long as they are valid.

Usually, when flying into Mexico they will make you get an FMM at the airport, and take it back when you fly out. I have also been asked for one when flying out of Tijuana, but not recently. However, I flew into CDMX from Panama last year and they not only didn't make you get one, there was no mechanism to get one if I'd wanted one. They either stamped your passport or you could go through the electronic kiosks. So, I suspect the FMM may be phased out at some point.

I have been all over Mexico and have NEVER been asked to produce an FMM. The Tijuana cops never ask for one. The cops in Mexicali didn't want to see one. I was stopped by a Federale on my way to Puerto Penasco once, and he never asked for an FMM. I fly domestically in Mexico and have never been asked for one. So, the odds of an authority figure wanting to see an FMM are very long, indeed. I suppose if they jack you up on some other charge, and really want to mess with you, they might insist on seeing one. Maybe.

HK offers reliable and free limousine rides to and from San Ysidro border day and night. From the border walk with the crowd South toward the taxi stand. HK has a small office nearby where you wait for the limo to arrive. Same on the way back. They would drive VIPs or nonVIPs as long as you tip the driver.

From Tijuana airport, UBER is not allowed to pick up at the terminal, which is exclusive to the taxi union with agents roaming outside. Official rate to La Zona Norte is about $15 which is not bad considering it's a narrow, busy and very dangerous road perching perilously on the side of the mesa. I would not want to roll down that 1000 ft hillside hehe.

Since You will be in CDMX first, you should have some dollar cash but withdraw pesos from ATMs inside banks to avoid skimming.

This weekend is Buen Fin in Mexico. It's kind of like Black Friday. It's a good time to check on flights on the airlines since they have had huge discounts in the past.

Also this weekend the new Mayor of Tijuana is trying to promote US tourists to visit Tijuana by allowing them to use the Medical lane if they make an 2000 peso purchase in Tijuana. Maybe you guys can try to get a girl to give you a receipt for her services.
