It's a very nice area and not touristy. If you want the full experience though stay in Lleras.

I have stayed in many hotels in Centro. I know many friends who have also stayed in hotels in centro.

I now have an apartment in centro and I have many guests stay with me.

I nor none of my friends or guests have had a problem on the streets of centro in the almost 10 years I have been walking these streets.

I have however been robbed in Parque lleras going back a while.

I have also heard 2 stories of friends getting robbed in taxis. A motorcycle pulls along side, takes your phone and gone.

Centro is a "colorful" part of the city with many personalities walking the streets. People generally are just trying to get to their destinations. There are also many off the beaten path streets in Centro. For as many busy centro streets you walk, there are 10 quiet streets with some very interesting architecture and scenery. Centro has a lot to discover. The undesirables are generally obvious. In every part of the city there are sketchy people. That goes for mentioning, in any part of the city, don't walk while messaging on your cell phone. Always try to be alert and aware of your surroundings. I am against flip flops or any kind of shoes that can just fall off your feet if you perhaps needed to high tail it across the street.

In taxis, close your window and lock your door.

Could not have had a better time. Met up with a couple of other gringos & had a great time. The only time we came close to any danger was 10 min before I was to get on the bus for the airport to return home, 10:30 am Ish, some young punk started following us by Parque Bolivar asking for money. I told him no 5 times yet he persisted. I told him no in a more aggressive voice & he walked to get even with me as opposed to behind me. I told him no again & he showed me a folded up knife in the palm of his hand. This kinda scared me a bit so I stopped to turn to face him & in a very aggressive louder voice told him no again & he backed away. I told my friend in a very loud voice "he's got a knife!" and the punk was gone. Before you ask, I turned to face him when I saw the knife only because I felt I could defend myself better face on than with my back or side to him. Remember this was at 10:30 am With a gazillion people on the street, shop owners, tienda owners etc. , everywhere. Anyway, I guess the point I am making is one can decrease their chances of something happening by walking with someone else or in a group, during daylight or early evening hours, not flashing your phone, etc. , etc.

I thought about not even posting this confrontation with this punk but everyone should be aware at all times, everywhere. Even at 10:30 am On a busy street. But I also think that everyone can go to El Centro & really enjoy it if they are cautious.

Every time I do not follow this rule it simply does not turn out well.

An ounce of prevention guys.[/QUOTE]I spent 1.5 hours Sunday and about 4.5 hours today walking El Centro. Sunday and the last 1.5 hours today I was walking alone. No destination, just walking, although we did stop at one casa today. Much of my time was spent west of the metro between Prado and San Antonio stations.

Sure there are ugly areas and there's always a few people with bad intentions. But they're looking for victims. They rarely glance my way and then look away. They're looking for the cargo shorts and flip flops guy wandering around trying to find some address while walking with their phone out. They're looking for the guys who look like they're about to crap their pants. Don't be that guy.

Why go there? Besides all the culture, the people there are real. In Poblado are the soulless clones trying to impress each other with their own importance. El Centro people are unfiltered. Then there's all the eye candy. No matter what type appeals to you, she's there, leaning in a doorway. There are 50 or more bars, including at least 3 little strip clubs where girls are hanging out waiting. For a step up there's all the casas as well.

If you're only interested in gringo food and overpriced drinks, stick with Lleras. If you want the real experience, you'll find it in El Centro.
