Medellin Reports

In comparison to robberies in el centro, which could happen with relatively low possibilities, having to deal with the mass of lower class people all the time in centro is more significant negative factor. They do not have the social manner / etiquette in the West. They hit and push each other when they walk and they stand on your way and block you. They say or do racist / sexist things. They follow and ridicule ethnic minorities or foreign women when they walk alone. I have never seen them embarrassed for anything they do. They have very thick skin.

There is a casa that shows guys a book of girls and then orders them up. It's pretty unique. All the others in Centro are "walk ins welcome".

Many of the casas, including the one on Carrera 46, close at 7 pm. If you show up when they are about to close, they aren't going to be ready to let you in.

You can offer the guy a sizable tip, 20 k minimum, to show you a lineup, or go earlier in the afternoon.

They have very thick skin.[/QUOTE]I guess I missed that part of El Centro. Spent another 2 hours there today and didn't see or hear anything like you describe. Sure people bump into you. The streets and sidewalks are often packed. A certain amount of bumping is unavoidable. In all the time I've spent in El Centro I've never seen anyone deliberately hit or shove someone. I've also never seen someone deliberately blocking me. I've been blocked by people paying attention to their phone or having a conversation, but that happens just as often in El Poblado.

Can you describe how a Colombian does a racist thing? I can figure out saying racist things, but doing? This part has me baffled. The Colombian gene pool is so mixed that many families, even more so with the lower classes, have a very broad range of skin colors and racial characteristics. They'll refer to each other as "negrita" or "blanquita", but it's not considered any type of insult or racial slur here. Same with "gordita" or "flakita. " Racism in general is very rare here, except with a few of the upper class families. Every Colombian I've talked with about this has been unable to understand the concept of racism. They know it exists in other countries, but they don't know why.

Sexist remarks. No problem there. I've seen this a lot. I've had taxi drivers, honk, whistle and yell at women on the sidewalk. I've seen plenty of Colombians turning to stare at women. I've seen more of that behavior in Poblado than El Centro.

Overall I've found the people in El Centro to be nicer, more polite and better to be around than the people in El Poblado. I've walked most of the streets worth walking in El Poblado and I'm working on doing the same in El Centro. In another few months I hope to know every street worth knowing downtown.

El Centro isn't for everyone. It's especially not for anyone who thinks low income Colombians are more racist than high income north Americans or Europeans. It's not for the timid. It's not for the tourist who thinks being a tourist makes him better than the natives. It's not for the let's get drunk and party tourist. It's not for the "this watch cost me $15,000" guy.

Figure out what you're looking for in Medellin and then figure out where you need to go to find it.

For a non Spanish speaker like me, what are the spanish words for following:

BBBJ.

CIM.

Anal.

Rimming.

Kiss on lips.

MSOG.

Also should I clarify the services offered prior to booking them thru facebook or these are all standard?

The people there are respectful and often humble to the foreigners who are white and / or old people. Your experience, therefore cognition of the society, could be different based on demographic group you belong to. This applies to your country as well.

Seriously, have you been to Colombia? Humble certainly isn't the first word to pop in my head to describe Colombians. They tend to be more brash than humble. Even more so in the poorer neighborhoods. That's their home. They might not have much, but they do have their pride.

Are you saying, if an old, white guy (who doesn't look that old or white from 25 feet away) is walking half a block away, the Colombians in El Centro will suddenly stop shoving people and making racist remarks? How do they know I'm there? Quite often they're facing the other direction? Yes, I'm looking that far ahead because problems are easier to deal with when they aren't in your face.

I can understand having concerns about El Centro. I can understand not liking the area. As I've said, it's not for everyone. What I can't understand is trying to reinvent the entire population just to support your own prejudice.

If you don't want to go to El Centro, don't go. I don't recommend it for anyone I don't know, unless I'm going with them. But stop making up stories about the people there.

You might say overt racism is rare, but it definitely exists in other forms.

My girlfriend is white and I am black. She frequently talks about racism. She has a 9 year old daughter with a black guy. She tells me about how her father is racist and at first did not want to have anything to do with her daughter and still asks her why she can not just find a white guy.

One day I was chatting with my girl while she was on the bus going home from work. She said that she is not racist but black people display the mannerisms that BT described in his post. I think there was a guy shoving to get on the bus or something. She said that she didn't understand why black people were so rude. Like Jj, I will add that I have never witnessed this type of thing in Colombia either. Maybe I am just too busy eye-fucking all the women.

Also two nights ago we were waiting for our Uber in front of the mall in Bogota. She started talking about her work at an energy company and how one of her coworkers posed the question as to why there were only 2 blacks working there. They attributed it to racism. I said before anything you have to answer the question as to whether blacks even apply for jobs at the company.

So although us as foreigners may not witness it, racism definitely exists in Colombia. Kind of reminds me of how since forever one group in my country had talked about police brutality, but people from another group could not believe it because their contact with the police had always been much different. Now with video cameras and cell phone cameras people are just starting to believe that maybe those people were telling the truth the whole time.

Racism absolutely exists in Colombia. The Afro-Colombian communities in the coastal areas, especially the Pacific coast, have been marginalized for generations.

Of course this has virtually no relevance to us hobbyists visiting Colombia. A hot 20 year old Paisa is quite happy to take your donation for a fun time, regardless of what color you are. In fact, as a marketing ploy, they will likely tell you that your race (whatever it is) happens to be their favorite!
