It really depends on where you are and at what time of year. Mindanao, for example does not experience typhoons and we have not had any rain to speak of here in Davao for a couple of weeks. This is the beginning of typhoon season, so you can expect the island of Luzon -- where Manila is situated-- to get hit fairly frequently.

Why bother with doing this BofA thing if you are going to get ripped off by them? You changed money at the airport before, I seriously doubt that BofA's exchange is even close to as good as the airport exchange.

Also a side note. For me, when I know I'm coming back to a country, I keep small denomination bills in the currency for future usage so if I want to skip changing currency or getting money at the airport, I can just hop a taxi and then get money after I'm settled at a better exchange rate. Personally, I don't think the exchanges at the airport are all that bad in the PI. It's not going to kill you to change $100-200 if you need it along with being comfortable.

The best rates and safest places to exchange your $ to Pesos are these banks, who are all over town: Metrobank, Banco De Oro, Bank of the Philippine Islands (#1/2/3 respectively). Or you can go to the Foreign Exchange counter of SM Malls all over town. They are owned by the same owner of Banco De Oro / Equitable Bank (merged). Bank hours are 9-3 while mall hours are till 9pm. Best rates too.

I actually welcome the coming of the rainy season and particularly the approach of the odd typhoon (as long as it doesn't get too close). March and April are too hot and being shaved by a typhoon or tropical storm lops 10 degrees off the temperature, and makes the air seem deliciously fresh and cool in comparison to the hot summer days. And my garden needs the water...!

I'm planning on spending six weeks in the Phils this summer, and wondered if any of you guys who have experienced a long holiday like this would care to offer any advice about where is the best place to go?

I was thinking I might go somewhere other than Manila/AC this time (because I'd like to try somewhere different. And possibly cheaper. I'm budgeting around 7500 US).

And yes, I have RTFF'd religiously, but I am still seeking an 'informed opinion' before I put together an itinerary, e. G. What is the best place to stay, what to do, what NOT to do, etc.

first, 6 weeks of pleasure, how did you pull that off? congrats, i hope to take a long vacation there again.

last summer i went for 3 months and spent about $7500 also. price vary by a lot in each city. manila i found a pinay couple that owns 2 high rise condos and i paid about 38 usd a night, with high speed internet in the condo. i found a hotel on taft street via asiarooms.com for 35usd that was ok.

i spent about 1 month in manila, a month in cebu, and a month in davao, give or take a few days. both cebu and davao have decent pension houses and hotels for around 900-1200 peso.

i like the diplomat hotel in cebu, it is a large hotel with a variety of rooms for decent rates. also has fast internet so you can hit the dating sites during your rest time.

i preferred davao of the big 3 cities. it was very safe, especially for foreigners. i would not venture past the city, but it is huge so you should not have to leave it.

the most important thing for me was flexibility. i could decide to fly to any other city and find a safe place to stay with very little notice. you can find flights for around 30-60 usd, to just about any city you want to visit.

you can pm if you have any exact advice.

If you're planning to spend any length of time in Davao, I suggest you think about an apartment. You can get a studio at Red Knight Garden for about $18 a night, and the place has a small but very clean pool, a small restaurant, and decent service. It's very convenient to the Lanang area, which has become a sort of second city center, and about 15 minutes from the traditional center of town around Rizal St. You might also want to consider Rose's Pension House on which several people from this board have commented.

I'll be staying in each of those cities for about a week very soon with a couple of nights in Angeles tacked on for good measure. I just really dislike the hassle of checking my girl in at the desk and us being eyed up and down when passing through a lobby full of porters which seems to be the case at most hotels. Sorry GG but I cannot help. I live in Davao so I know the city pretty well, and I stay in hotels when I'm in Manila and Cebu. However I'm sure there are other guys on this board who know these cities and would be able to help you.
