Side effects of Thai massage
I am not sure whether I want to spend Rs. 5400 on a treatment which has side effects. I prefer Sri Lankan "feeling" massage. A few years ago a girl at Juliana Hotel banged on my chest with her fist and broke one of my ribs.
This is what someone has written on the internet:
"I've been told by Doctors that elements of traditional Thai Massage can be quite unhealthful. In particular, the pinching off of blood flow in the upper legs (femoral arteries) and then releasing which causes a heated feeling. Doctors state that pinching off of blood flow at this major artery could cause potential thrombosis (clots in the artery) which could migrate and cause a stroke. Other elements that can be dangerous depending upon your health are the various joint snappings in the elbows and knees. As stated by other folks in the string, if you already have back problems, joint problems et al, it would not be wise to get a full traditional Thai Massage. ".

This is another writer:
"Thai Massage Messed Up My Neck! I am a healthy 25 YO and had a seated thai massage yesterday. The therapist at one point sat me on the floor, turned my head sideways and cracked it (side of head towards shoulder). When she then turned it to the left, she exerted quite a bit of pressure - I've had quite a few massages and cracking done, but on this occasion I felt about 5 pretty strange cracks/pops in the right side of my neck. Almost like something became misaligned.
After wards, I had difficulty completely turning my head to the right! I was really freaked out. I told them and she tried to 'realign' it - I am not sure if it's the cervical spine or something else - it doesn't hurt when I look straight ahead but my right head turn, looking straight up,looking down... it's all now limited!
Since getting home I've read all the dangers of having this done. I slept it off, but now it's the morning and I honestly don't feel any better and don't know what to do."
"Thai Massage is very tough, and as suggested, many practitioners don't know what they're doing. You're better off with Swedish-type massage."

One of the problems we have is that where the Thai girls in Colombo are concerned, we don't know how much training they have had. Do they ever show a certificate of training?
