Spent the weekend in TJ a couple weeks ago after a week in LA and stayed at the Hotel Pueblo Amigo. I paid $100 a night after booking it online. This sound expensive but they usually charge more because this really is a nice hotel by any standards. It's right near the border so I walked to the Zona during the day and took a cab after it was dark.
After hanging out Friday night and during the day on Saturday in the Zona, I decided to spend Saturday night trying out the night life near the hotel. Right next to the hotel there is a complex with all kinds of restuarants and clubs. I went through it a while back but didn't really spend much time because I was in a hurry to go downtown to get to my regular activities. This time I went through it pretty good. There's a ton of night life. Great upscale places to eat and drink and there were plenty of pretty girls everywhere. They were regular girls and there were lots of possiblities but my very limited Spanish held me back. The area is worth checking out if you have command of the language and some extra time on a weekend night.
I made it back to the Zona Sunday to once again participate in the activities that were the main purpose of my visit. That afternoon I made my usual dash back to the San Diego airport for my flight home. The line accross the border was extra long so I rented one of those bikes for $7. The price changes every time I ask but it save me at least an hour. It was the only way I'd have made my flight.

Last 5 times re-entering the usa from a day in tj on foot I noticed they swipe your drivers liscense. One dude in another line had a warrent for who knows what and was being heldup for a sitdown with the police I am guessing.
So be careful if you have some lameass warrant out for your arrest if walking back for re-entry to the usa.

I never drive over the border but have a friend I use to monger with in tj who wants to visit and make a trip for old times sake. He can't leave the states cause of some trouble he got into. So swiping his drivers licsense could get ugly.
When you drive back into the states from tj do they swipe your drivers liscense? How about the passengers in the car? I would think not. Just asking incase he wants to risk it. I think this would bog down the traffic re-entering the states. Its already backed up a ton as it is.

Bud,
They generally do not swip your license or passport when you drive back by car. But they can as they all have scanners in every booth, so be careful. As well, your license plates are automatically scanned as you drive up so if the owner of the car has any outstanding, ahem, "issues" that he needs to deal with it could be a problem.
My advice - be careful if you are trying to avoid a license scan. After 9/11, everybody is a suspect. Depending on your friend's situation, it may not be worth it for a night of fun in TJ.

Yes, there are American girls who work in TJ. Generally, they seem to work as SWs rather than in the clubs. One of the doormen of a local club was pimping out two American SWs a few weeks ago on a Thursday night. They were older and less attractive. Generally, when I see American girls working in La Zona, they are older, less attractive and in one case she looked to be either a real junkie or mentally ill.
