Come here to Portugal, 50 % of the working girls are Brazilians. For them the entry into Portugal is easy, they speak the same language and have the same culture. In Lisbon there are at least 20 "Privados" and each one has minimum 2.3 Brazilians. In the night-spots like Elefante Branco of 100 girls at least 60 are from Brazil. Easy to meet outside, just take them out for dinner or a disco. They will love it to be treated as a normal GF.

I was going to sarcasticly say rent a hotel room before I found out that the louziest/ dirtiest hotels in Rio were charging at least $ 300 per night during the new year holidays. E.g. Savoy Othon, Ducasse, Martinique, etc.
Sadly with Rio winning both the world cup and the olympics, the residents of Rio went completely off their heads and are acting very cocky for a 3rd world jungle.
I don't like what I am seeing.

Maybe you can use a short term motel for the last night? I am not sure how they price around new years eve.

I thought too, that to spend the new years Eve in Rio, especially with hot weather, could be very cool and something new for me living in Europe so cold in december, but after I saw the prices, I decided it surely not worth it: same stuff at 3x higher price....too bad !

New Year is an expensive time with big parties and popular with Brasilians, not just cariocas and foreigners.
You can get much cheaper than USD$300, though I'd suggest you hurry.

But there again it's in [b]Centro[/b] - which is great if you're experienced and know the city centre (knock shops are walking distance, though not as close as with the other Ibis) and experienced at getting from there to Copa (this Ibis is easy by bus, a few mins walk for metro). [url="http://www.riospresidentehotel.com.br/index.htm"]Presidente[/url] is also offering a good rate just now for 31st Dec - R227 - probably about USD$132. It's close to cheap Rua Carioca monger holes, the Metro, and Lapa/Centro. But (like the more central of the two Ibis and Formule) it's in Tiradentes, which would give a pretty run-down impression of Rio to any newcomer.[i] (Haven't stayed there, so no idea what they think of you hangin' with yo' ho' in the reception or entertainin' someone who looks like yo ho even if she is non-GDP - see Sperto's previous post lol and add, 'If XXX is a fraction of your age/looks, they will think she's a ho whether she is or not.' And if you have little negligible public rapport and rapid interaction, yes, they'll think she's a ho.)[/i]
I haven't decided whether I'm in Rio over New Year yet. If I am, I'll get my usual Copa apartment if it's available and my landlady isn't having a 'market surge moment.' If not I'll probably book somewhere in North Centro when I arrive (these places are sh*t cheap at any time - but most punters would baulk at them - most can not be booked online).
I'd (personally) advise any first timers to stay in [b]Copa[/b] or [b]Ipanema[/b] until they know their way around this huge city. It's not that Centro is unmanageable to an experienced traveller. Just that the beach party areas and the almost Disneyland atmosphere of mongering in Copa/Ipanema is something you would not want to miss. New Year is also pretty big on parties. I found my first Copa beach party a bit claustrophobic. Good preparation for Carnaval though (which makes organising a mere World Olympics look a bit of a doddle. ;))

I respectuffly disagree. For the 2007 reveillon, I booked a hotel room in Windsor Plaza Copacabana Hotel (princessa isabel) and round trip airfare from the US for under 3000 dollars. I believe I stayed about 10 days. I got there before christmas and left two days after new year. I booked my flight in early December of that year.
Checking expedia.com., the same trip is costing today $5850. That's double the price what I paid before.
Cariocas are asking for first world countries prices for a 3rd world services.
I would advise anyone NOT get a hotel room in Centro for NYE, unless you know for a fact that the metro will run all night. You can absolutely forget betting a cab in Copa or Ipanema on NYE, its just not happening (I found this out the hard way). The buses are jammed packed, sometimes you cant get even get on, there are so many people! So unless that metro is going to run all night long, forget about getting a hotel in centro.

I have no problem with crowded buses personally. But you are right, you are taking your life in your hands a bit if you want to do New Year from Centro lol. I have no idea about airfares from the US. From Europe or Australia I expect them to be expensive, but you are paying for the party. I'm looking multi-trip so might come in from B.Aires anyway. I'm sure people considering it are checking fares and hotels themselves and making their own minds up. I was just quoting a few sample prices in case it helped anyone. I don't mind paying airfares but I never pay a lot for hotels and never book anything till I get where I'm going. I know my way doesn't suit most people, so I'm sure there's plenty of room for more mainstream advice. :)

The metro is running ok but the queue is going to be five blocks long.
Take it from my experience when I was staying at Flamengo.
That's why I prefer Fortaleza. They have a similar event on Praia Iracema. I park my car 4-5 blocks away and try to leave late from there.

This may be deemed an act of war between drug gangs and police. In a country like Brazil that had a very recent "junta" past, such violence will give birth to a "shadow" police squad to control the violence. I believe such crime will generate a right-wing government in the next presidency that will support a war on Rio gangs to protect tourism.

I don't think so. This kind of thing happens frequently in Rio. It is also in the Northern part. Far away from where most tourists will be staying. It is just being sensationalized by the media. What's new.
