Welcome bro, let me start by saying that most of the things you plan pre-trip will never happen because once you get there plans go out the window. I agree with Old Kool, stay in Sosua. Get a few rooms at Europa hotel (40 usd a night), there is a bar out front as the group meet spot and you are within walking distance to the beach and clubs. This also allows each guy to maintain some independence.

I would not recommend a first timer to the DR to rent a car. The roads are bad, motochonchos do stupid shit and the cops will fuck with you, not to mention the shakedown on five gringos by the corrupt police and lawyers. Once you get a few trips to the DR under your belt you will be better prepared for these pitfalls. A group of gringos getting out of an SUV will probably only draw the hardcore girls that will be only thinking about a quick payday.

My first trip to Medellin in 2009 was with a group of seven and five of us had never met before, we were all first timers to Medellin. Four guys rented a four bedroom penthouse compete with pool table (El Pablado), I rented a two bedroom across the street for me and the other guys stayed in a hotel 20 minutes away. Overdue FR's from late Sept. Sorry for the delay in posting this series of reports; work's been crazy since I returned.

Hitched a ride to POP on a cargo plane, which is owned by friend, so saved a bit on airfare. My friend wanted to join me, but he had other stops to make on other islands. Happened that the A / A Miami flight arrived just after us, but I managed to get into the terminal ahead of the passengers so I didn't have to wait in any lines. POP airport is small and easily navigated. Once inside I went to the area where you can purchase your tourist card. As I already purchased it in advance online, I simply presented the form to the second set of officials (first group was if you needed to purchase the tourist card).

Went past baggage claim and then thru customs. Didn't like the aggressive porters trying to grab my suitcase. Private driver was waiting to take me to BB. Along the way we stopped for a beer at a roadside "caf" (I had a beer / driver a juice). I wasn't aware there were two sizes of "El Presidente" and wound up with a grande sized bottle of ice cold goodness. The driver and I sat at a roadside table, played a few games of dominos which, judging from the many other occupied tables, seems to a popular way for locals to pass time and gossip.

After finishing the beer and getting a slight buzz (no real food since early in the morning) we continued on thru Puerto Plate. Stopped at a money changer, place called Rosas I think. The spot forex rate that morning was 47.24; at the airport the rate was 37 pesos to the USD, which I knew this was a rip-off. At the money changer, the rate was fair at 45.50. Then it was on to BB.

Day 5.

Breakfast at hotel was good; it's a set menu with quite a few options; eggs, omelets, pancakes, bacon, ham, etc. Afterwards I went to place up the street for a manicure / pedicure (600 p) and to another place for a haircut (200 p). I also checked around for a place to get a massage, the salon where I got the manicure offered them, but the small room and on their premises looked filthy and the massage table was nasty looking as well; I was quoted 600 p for one hour and 1,000 p for one hour outcall at my hotel. The driver asked if I liked sugar cane juice and if I've ever had it. Being from south Florida I of course knew of it, but it was something I have not had in years so I jumped at the chance to get some. For future visits, just past the laundry place, the little massage place does a good massage for 600 p. They'll finish you for 1000 p, but definitely YMMV. Probably best to see if take out is available, as I don't think the bedding on the tables gets changed often.
