I don't know what you mean by "renowned" places, but with hundreds of recent experiences in Bangkok and Pattaya over the past few years I am sure it's not "standard practice" there. Never had issues with PI customs, am more concerned about Saudi on my return LOL. Or buy it on the Internet and have it sent to your hotel.
