You need to go south to Stuttgart. ICE train from Frankfurt to Stuttgart can be cheap (40 euros) if booked online a month ahead, but around 80 closer to the date. And from Stuttgart a direct 25 minute S-bahn trip to Hulb, followed by short 7 minute walk. I have visited Sakura a few times; never failed to find a good room there. And it has one of the cleanest, modern, and well planned interior. Good food too. Day trip from Frankfurt to Sakura and back is quite doable.

Last time I mostly flew between cities and took lots of Ubers, but I utilized the trains quite a bit too, and I had no problems. I understand that's not the regular experience of many:

But I have NOT taken trains to Berlin (too long from Frankfurt), and I do notice on the display boards that trains to Berlin are often delayed by an hour or outright cancelled. The article you quoted talks solely of her experiences with trains to Berlin, so it is not surprising.

This year, there were frequent disruptions to trains passing through Mannheim; but that is because the tracks there are being refurbished. By planning my southward journeys through Heidelberg / Stuttgart instead, I removed the risk of Mannheim disruptions. I gather that the Mannheim upgrades will be finished soon. Her complaint about delays on the train to Bern is thus not surprising as it passes through Mannheim. I avoid the Mannheim route when I go to Globe, by going via Stuttgart to enter Switzerland from the northeastern side instead of through Basel.

On my last trip to Europe I flew into Frankfurt and then grabbed a train to Berlin. It was supposed to be a direct ICE train. However, when I actually got on it 20 minutes late. There was now a connection in Hanover. When I got there late, I missed that connection, and had to grab a slow ass IC train for the rest of my journey. Instead of getting to Berlin at 15:08. I did not get there until about 17:00. On every trip that I had to catch a connecting train. I arrived late and missed the connection. As I plan my next trip, I am only planning on cities I can get to direct on ICE trains, with no connections. However, that plan is not fool proof.

As to "late trains". Have you flown lately? When I add the cost and time to get from hotel to airport and then the same getting off. The time before check in etc. Anything short of 4-5 hours by train is the same as flying at 1/4 the price (or less) and you end up in the center of town.

Then it was decided to make Deutsche Bahn profitable, so investments were cut dramatically. Infrastructure went from OK to crap. Only 60% of the long distance trains are on time and they adjusted how they define "on time" otherwise the numbers would be worse. For example, cancelled trains because of some technical defect don't count towards punctuality statistics. The Swiss unfortunate enough to go by train in Germany say that they would have taken their halberds and pitchforks out a long time ago.

On top of the generic problems in Germany, the area around Stuttgart, especially towards south and east was impacted by the Stuttgart 21 project. After many, many years of planning, political fights, even a referendum, construction started in 2010 and was supposed to be finished in 2019. Parts of the project are finished, but the entire project is now projected to not be finished in December 2026. Cost went from 2. 6 to over 8 billion EUR.

Minutes before the flight. 30 minutes to get there and often on a good day 60-90 minutes from the time the plane lands til I'm at my hotel it's just less stressful and often faster to take the train. And price-wise no contest. Plus I can make my plans much closer to departure with many fewer issues But the walk to get into the stuttgart station is a *****.

But when driving in Switzerland is just a nightmare leading to jail, I love so much hearing atmospheric V8 in free speed when it is at home in Germany, almost making me hard, like top beauty Cleo as soon I saw her. Unfortunately, less and less free speed and more and more who are not able to understand when you are around 150 km / h faster than them, when they think they are fast, so You must be careful about them.

I always use RMV go app to purchase tickets while I am in Frankfurt area. However, last two weeks, I tried both app on the phone and rmv englsih website from San Francisco area, it either time me out or not working on my app.

Can some local people verify that for me? I will be in Frankfurt area late next month. Sure want to know if I can use the app. If not, what is alternative app which I can purchase local train or tram tickets.

Berlin has BVG Vienna has theirs. Generally you can also buy day and multi day tickets at almost any ticket kiosk on the street but the app is nicer.
