First off, thanks to all the posters for info that made me confident enough to travel 30 hours for some fun all alone. mid high. thumbs on top of chin. this would be good to use with your doctor or other person important to you, but almost never to a person younger than yourself regardless.

standard. tops of fingers almost touching chin. this is to say hello / goodbye to persons of respect, like police, judges, teachers, grandparents and the like but rarely to a person younger than yourself.

lower standard. thumbs touching center of your chest. good to use to answer anyone wai ing you in the higher categories if they are younger or in a serving capacity to you. note, this is the wai all people use when in a buddhist ceremony where the whole audience is listening to a monk prayer or speech. the all purpose return wai for serving people wai-ing to you.

the general rule is the wai is higher for people older than you or if a boss or superior, for example. it is used for both hello and goodbye. if one hand is full, join it in the best wai you can and if both hands full, wai anyway as best you can; never give a thai a single hand wai, although it is very common in tibetan buddhism.

note that a little bow, like a dip of the head is another sign of respect and often is given by people on motorbikes and while driving car or if acknowledging someone across the street or at a distance.

the wai is not a strictly religious gesture like western praying hands are.

it is better to practice these positions because sloppy wai is seen as half hearted and not sincere. just going thru the motions or even being cynical or insulting on purpose. an open handed wave near the face is ok done by foreigners, but do not crook the fingers in motion or in a still gesture.

some thai enjoy a hand shake because it makes them feel cosmopolitan but many see it as an intrusion but will smile and do it to humor the cute / pet acting that foreigners do. better to wai or wave unless the thai extends hand to shake first.

this is no small matter to thai, but like the other things uninformed foreigners do, thai will smile and think "aren't these foreigners quaint or childlike or just rude."[/i]

I am an American. I never wai. It is totally unecesary for a Westerner to wai. But if a falang does the wai I doubt it would be offensive to a Thai. Most Thais realize the falang doing the wai is trying to be respectful whether they do it correctly or not.

Americans aren't the only falangs I've seen doing the wai.

It's wrong to suggest farang tourists who have amassed the means to fly halfway around the world, stay in a five star hotel, eat at over priced restaurants and over tip SWs are stupid and lazy. I think being polite, friendly and cheerful is universally understood and sufficient. I also think taking the time to learn how to properly wai and say a few basic polite phrases in Thai is a good idea.

I have more sympathy for needy girls trying to support their children, parents etc, and would rather over tip just a little instead, if the girl really deserves it. I've missed your posts while you were out of town. They are filled with useful information and good advice. My facetious remark about expensive hotels, restaurants and generous tipping was written to convey that I understand if you have money to travel to Bangkok you probably work at least reasonably hard and are probably reasonably intelligent; or you inherited it or won the lottery.
