Okay X, I concede I've only eaten a couple of choices from the menu, none of it very exotic. I think I have had the cheeseburger, which actually tasted like meat, and something else that I do not recall. The couple of times I have sampled food at LA, it was tasteless, but then no one goes to either place for the quality of the food.

The number of women at G Point is significantly smaller than at LA, and that's why I said it's hit or miss. I have had a couple of good experiences there, and more often than not I've left alone. I go there mainly cause it's a nice place to hang out. There's no hassle, and I usually like the band. If I do meet someone, I consider it a bonus since I do not go with that expectation. I always figure if I strike out at G Point I can always go back and try again at LA or head up to EDSA complex.

I've also noticed what appears to be an increasing number of women at Amazonia, but the quality does not seem to be getting any better. Maybe these are the women who used to hang at LA but figure they cannot compete for the Korean guys. As I've said before, I've never been lucky there though I drop by every time I go to LA Cafe.

Come Sunday, I'm off to Africa for a month, which if nothing else will be a radical change of scene. I've not been there for some time, and I'll be interested to see if Nairobi has changed much in the ten years since I've been there.

Well GE, your post begs the question, "Where do YOU go for quality food?"

A while back someone suggested a Sunday bbq at the Lotus rooftop. Never made it, but it sounds nice. Slouch Hat is okay. Swagman Hotel always seems to have many diners, but somehow I've never felt the urge to sit down in the place.

LA Cafe, I only order the pancit. It comes on a huge platter and you can invite friends to help you eat it. The western dishes were rather bland, as GE mentions. You can walk across the street to the Filipino place and get bland for one third the price.

The hottest woman I ever met at Amazonia was a 2nd floor waitress. Wow. Unfortunately, she'd already commited herself to someone. You have to be quick! Once I spyed a lady dancing inside the bar on one of those platforms. There weren't many customers so she was wiping dust on some of the upper shelves and showing a lot of leg. The whole scene struck me as sexy/weird and I tried to take a picture.

As often happens in the Philippines, some idiot shouted out, "hey, he's taking your picture", causing her to turn around -- the scene I wanted was lost. And then she wanted to see and wanted a copy and we exchanged email / phone number and she's been pestering me ever since.

How do you explain to a woman that you were taking her picture NOT becuase you love her, but because a woman, standing on a table in a black miniskirt, reaching up and dusting stuff, is a really unique situation.

I had some time to kill yesterday and decided to explore Starfleet (SF) and take one for the team, so I could post an update for those with inquiring minds.

I had a personal driver who knew where it was located, but en-route to SF we passed AF1 and it is approximately 1K past AF1 on the same side of the highway.

For good food, there are lots of places in Makati. I like Italiannis in Greenbelt. I like all of the restaurants in little Tokyo on Pasong Tamo. There are also some excellent restaurants in Ft. Bonafacio and in Rockwell (Power Plant) Mall. These are all top of the line, expensive places that will run Php1,500-2,500 a person, but the food is excellent. Needless to say, I do not take LA Cafe ladies there.

In Malate, they also have cafe Havana and something called ...Bistro which is also nice.

In Makati, Greenbelt 2, Cafe havana has a great lunch buffet selection, Sentro right above it and there is a nice Spanish restaurant on the third floor beside the theaters overlooking all of Grennbelt area - good wine selection. GB 3 has plenty to offer...like GE said Italiannis, Masa, Nuovo...etc

yes I love that place also, cause its one of the few ones u can sit outside. Food is great, made fresh upon order. Love the meat, sometimes they have funny terrorist TV in there, but I go there for the food , LOL, not interested in politics so much. Prices start 200p for a nice meal, order some extra humus and bread and ur full allready :)
The dont serve alcohol, but its ok, you can have that anywhere in that area.

The best place I've found for a decent and reasonably priced meal in Malate/Ermita is the Hobbit House on Del Pilar near the La Corona Best Western Hotel. For those that don't know, it's almost entirely staffed by Little People (midgets for the non-PC crowd).

I first went there several years ago just for the novelty factor and at that time I wasn't very impressed with the food but I returned on my last trip to Manila in June and my meal was fantastic. They must have hired a new chef because the difference was like night and day. I had the seafood spaghetti which came with a salad and garlic bread. Can't remember the total but it was in the 300-350 range. The staff is super friendly and they usually have a band or single musician providing some music. Also they have a pool table set off in a side room which I didn't know about before. My only complaint is the place is kind of dark. There is some overhead lighting and candles on the tables but they could use a few more lights IMO. The beer selection is good too with labels from around the world.

I took a lady there with me and she absolutely loved it too, mainly because of the friendly and entertaining staff. We went into the pool room and shot pool for an hour and we had our own private little waitress cater to our every need. I bought the waitress a margarita and it obviously got her drunk pretty quick and had her dancing all over the place in no time. The glass was almost as big as she was but she drank it all. There's nothing quite like watching your lady dirty dance with a midget. LOL. My only regret was I didn't have a camera with me. One more place that adds to the uniqueness of the Philippines.

I also have been to the Hobbit House on several occasions and have always had a great time there. The little people staff is more than just a novelty; they are some of the hardest working restaurant staff I’ve encountered in any country.

If you are looking for something different and fun to take a special lady, go there on a Monday night. Freddie Aguilar, a famous Filipino musician, always plays there on Mondays. Most of his songs are in Tagalog so your girl will have to translate, but he puts on a great show. Whenever I’ve gone there, all of the Filipinos in the audience, including my girlfriend, were singing along to most of his songs. I've met him and members of his band after the show and they're a great bunch of guys.

It's a great place to go to other than the gogo bars to experience a little Filipino culture.

First of all, I'll second the opinions of GE and Blink, the best value Ermita eats are at Shwarma. At the moment there are two right across from each other just a few steps away from LA cafe. Warning, you might get some burbs / indegestion. Don't overdo it....

As for Hobbit house, I've only been to the one in Malate, near Remedios Circle. Sagramore doesn't tell us when he was last at Ermita Hobbit, which, sorry, makes the food quality info useles. Cooks do change. I'll also say that the service is only passable at Malate. There's a good reason for this. I suspect some of these hobbits have been on the job for 30+ years, and the old bones are getting creaky. I imagine they're also plenty fed up with the freak show atmosphere.

Neverhteless, the novelty factor and the good music make it well worthwile. The first time I went to Hobbit, Freddy Agular was sitting at the next table. I had no idea who he was, but the ladies (2) were all excited. I gave them my camera and let them interuupt his evening out. He was very gracious and let them take pictures. Unfortunately, the two ladies turned out to be a real pain in the asss, so they never received the pics. (one was a hanger on, but expected to get paid as if she was the belle of the ball.)

Freddy Aguilar is mostly a folk singer and he's famous in the Philippoines. You might see him play at Hobbit or even LA cafe (2nd floor).

Why don't you try Amazonia bar just down from LA Cafe in Ermita? Earlier this year, I met a lovely woman there, and went ST in the hotel rooms in this complex. Not expensive. The rooms are not large, but mine seemed very clean, quite modern, and the shower worked well. It does not deliver the Karaoke experience, but I find that aspect boring. Of course you can always go to Quezon City and pay Korean-type extortionate rates, but I assume you don't want that level of expense if it can be avoided.
