See the attached map. This is the most important map in Rio. This is the metro map. This is how most Cariocas get around.
My recommendation about where to stay are:
1. Metro Jardim Oceanico. Search for places as near to Ave de pepe 400 (Perola Negra), or Olegario Maciel 7 (Na Brasa Colombia) as possible. PN is the best terma in Rio IMHO. We had a great night there last week, super talent, super hot negra from Rio, super hot morena from MInas. The talent there goes back and forth with 4 x4. Good rooms, including a BDSM suite. Walk to the metro to go do the centro prive thing. Beach is clean, and is where the girls from PN will come before work. The metro station is new since Bubba wrote his guide in 2013, and it is the driver of economic and social growth.

2. Botafogo. Search for places at or near Rua Sao Clemente 114, close to the best sex motel, Panda. Then you can take the metro to centro and take the bus to Solarium, and all the wealthy, upper middle class districts between botafogo and PUC, where you should take English if you stay long enough. Botafogo is the real, upper middle class, but mixed race carioca the gema neighborhood. You should also consider Flamengo, Largo do Machado, and even Catete.
Do not stay in Copa. Copa is dangerous, the water is dirty, basically a toilet bowl. Criminals go to Copa to find victims. Be the bat, not the ball. Most board members have different views about Copa which is kind of times square compared to Barra being Miami.

Rio de Janeiro has always been a city that I have wanted to visit as a tourist. Of course, I read about the termas on ISG and heard about Rio from others, but it remained way down on my list of places to visit as a hobbyist. When I decided to go to Sao Paulo for my pilgrimage to Scandallo, I figured I would include a trip to Rio as well. I planned out four nights out of my nine in Brazil to spend in Rio and booked a flight on Azul Airlines a few weeks before my flight to SP. As I shared on the Sao Paulo forum, this decision was the biggest mistake of my trip.
I flew from CDH to SDU on a Tuesday. Both airports are relatively small and super convenient. Getting my bags at SDU was quick and easy but I struggled finding Uber because there were no signs. I asked two different airport employees, none of which spoke English, and they pointed me in the same direction. If you ever fly into SDU and want to take an Uber, it's down at what's called the Uber Lounge at the very far end of the airport past the small shopping mall. Yes, just keep walking to the very end!
I decided to stay at the Hilton Copacabana because I had a good corporate rate and it looked like it was conveniently located. Given the previous afternoon I had at the Taj Mahal and that I was up all night / morning with garota #4 from Scandallo, I decided to rest for a bit and then hit Solarium and Centaurus. I am not sure I would recommend the Hilton, but it was relatively cheap and they serve a great burger on the 39th floor. Breakfast was terrible there, however.
I arrived at Solarium around 7:30 pm and my first impression was just how small it was especially compared to Scandallo. For those that have not been, Solarium is a small 3 or 4 story building. When you first enter the reception area you are told the pricing structure and then given a locker key with a number. As I recall, the pricing consisted of your entry, the cost of the room that you choose and the cost of a girl for an hour and you pay before you leave (plus your drinks). I went into the locker room and changed into a robe and flipflops and then walked up some stairs to the bar area. It's a really small bar with bench seating around the perimeter and a small bar in the corner. I ordered a cold beer and sat down on the bench to scope out the talent in the room. My first reaction was "OMG! WTF am I doing here? I could be at Scandallo right now!" Most of the ladies at Solarium were curvy and heavily tattooed. I am typically the type of guy that will quickly cut my losses and leave, but I decided to give it an hour. After about 30 minutes I saw something interesting. A beautiful little fun-size spinner with a great smile. I was pleasantly surprised that this little lady spoke excellent English and was very kind and pleasant. What's interesting about Solarium is that once you agree to go to a room with a lady, she takes your key with her and arranges a room for the two of you. The bar area at Centaurus is just a little bigger but here the ladies are more forward but not to the point of being aggressive. Their bar is also relatively small, but this bar was loud and there were customers and girls dancing. Like Solarium, most of the ladies were not appealing to me but there were a couple that I had my eye on. Just before I was about to approach a lady, this hot little spinner entered the bar area in a tight pink little dress. I recall saying Hello, to her and immediately gesturing that I wanted to get a room with her. Had I not been in an area where I was a little uncomfortable and had I not been so damn sore, I would have stayed with this lady for a while or asked her to come to my hotel. Instead, I got an Uber and was out of 4 x4 in a little over an hour. Not being too familiar with Rio and being a gringo alone in this part of the city, I decided to get back to my hotel rather than hang out there at 4 x4 looking for round 2.
