Medellin Reports

Believe it or not, in maybe 10 years I have been going to Medellin (sparsely say from multiple visits in one year to 2 years without going) FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME I went looking Hotel M (a.k.a. Mansion) from outside. I was sipping my coffee at Juan Valdez and I found out by chance that the most famous place in ISG was just one block from me, besides having a Pokemon Go gym almost right in front (it could be a plus for someone). So, I thought why not to go there and see it, at long last?

Yes, it looks a very good place! :p

I also understood that all the gringoes that I see at Juan Valdez, in particular those showing the photo of the drink they want to order on their cell phone, because they seem unable to order it in the standard way, come straight from there. Today I have seen at least two of them (two very nice and well-mannered guys, I must say) sipping their coffee and then going back to their place up the street. Hello, if you read this! :)

Yesterday I had my tough time fighting against Ley Seca. Why the Hell South American countries should close bars and forbid alcohol for 1+ day (3 days in Ecuador), because the day after there are elections, is out of my understanding, but that's out of topic. And not only alcohol. Today I missed the ride on bicycle on the Av. Poblado that I have been looking forward for a long time, because ALSO the Ciclovia is banned by elections. WTF!

By the way, I hit with surgical precision both dates of elections. At the end of May I was in Cartagena, and it has been the most lonely Saturday I ever remember there (just few desperate ugly girls at Reloy). Today, I am here in Medellin. I did not have the freedom to choose the dates of my travels, but I precisely hit both elections.

At NAME-REMOVED (Steak House on Av. De Las Palmas, I don't want to put the restaurant in trouble), I wanted a beer to accompany the steak, and two very embarrassed waiters had to tell me that no beer was allowed because of the Ley Seca. Then what, I replied?
- We can serve only soft drinks, wine and sangria.
- WTF! Isn't wine an alcoholic drink?
- Yes, but the Gerente decided that. No beer, only wine.
- This is not logical! Can I have beer then?
- If you want, we have Aguila Zero, with no alcohol.
- NO! Do you have Wine Zero, without alcohol?
- Not really. Sorry, this is not our fault. It's the Gerente. We can serve you wine, but not beer.
- Well, I am going to call Police, reporting that here they serve ILLEGAL drinks! Wine is not allowed, as well as beer.

I said that laughing, but the response was immediate:
- OW NO! We will give you a beer, but in glass without bottle!

The steak was very good, the beer cold, the service excellent, the waiters so nice with me. What to ask more?

Ahh. The logic of the Paisas! Got to love them.

And the law is so unevenly enforced. I can imagine La Cueva was serving, because they grease up the cops. And my chica friends tell me that it's not that hard to find someone to sell you alcohol in the barrios. It's only the legit places that seem to suffer. I was in Laureles for the election in May, and Saturday night it was a ghost town on La 70.

Because of Ley Seca, there were not many options available yesterday night.

I was in the mood of doing something different, so I went to Dreams SW, that is one of the very few swinger clubs in Medellin. Those who are used to these places in Europe (big cities can have 50+ clubs, from small to big ones with even 200+ persons inside on a weekend night) will find the place very disappointing, but I like the underground atmosphere of the small place with naughty Colombians.

Only couples admitted on Saturday, but the "receptionist" called a girl to accompany me (200 k). She was so nice! I did not expect such a nice person. To be honest, I was prepared to greet some ultra hard-core pro, someone you would not like to take out to dinner because of the public shame, but she was really a nice girl. She works there (dance etc.) and she is anything but a beginner on the scene, but she really behaved as she was my girlfriend. Intelligent in understanding what to do and what to not do, sensitive, and of course without inhibitions.

There were about 7-8 couples, some genuine some others like us. Some very nice girls and guys, mixed with ugly and average. Yes, normal people. We worked hard to corrupt a girl with her man, who looked very skeptical and not really involved in the game. After two hours, drinks and light teasing on the couch, I saw her in a group of 6, where she and the other two girls were finding the way to masturbate each other (please note: 6 hands for 3 pussies, do the math). In USA, the superdeveloped and most advanced World, they ask me to show a picture ID in the restaurants of airports (proven in JFK and ATL) if I want a beer to accompany a burger. Please note:
1) I am 50+ and it's been a long time that anyone does not take me as teen (except in USA).
2) In airports, there are no UMs going around alone without staff.

In this interesting country, for a teen it seems more difficult to have a beer than a gun at school. (Sadly).

Believe it or not, in Bogota in Chapinero I have seen a "Ley Seca Bar". One block from Pussy House.

Hola amigos, I've been lurking here at the Medellin thread for some time now, lots of good info! So I finally pulled the trigger and booked a nice 2 bedroom apartment in El Poblado, Bosques de Provinza Medellin Cra 36. I will be there in late July.

I need a little help here, will my AT&T iPhone work there in Medellin?

What I do is the following (others will advise differently, especially those who have a plan including roaming for a small fee):

1) I keep my phone with its European SIM card. I do not answer calls, but I call back using WeChatOut (I am always online via wifi, see below) instead of SkypeOut, which I find cumbersome.

2) I have a local SIM card of Movistar, which never expires apparently. I put it in a cheap GSM phone and I just top it up 20k COP for a week of local calls.
Why the cheap phone? For when I go to places where I don't want to have expensive items with me.

3) I have a 4G Mobile WIFI modem. I buy a Claro SIM card with a 500MB data plan, which costs about 50k total. Last time, I topped up extra 50k, to buy a 2GB data plan lasting one month. With this modem, I have my portable wifi always with me. I use my regular phone with its European SIM, but online connected to the portable wifi. Perfect.

[/QUOTE]I've been to Colombia twice and had no problem using my AT&T phone. However, my company has my phone set up for international roaming and AT&T charges $10/ day when you use it. If my company wasn't paying for this anyway, I'd buy a local SIM and use that.

Look into dual SIM phones. They are very convenient for anyone who travels internationally on a regular basis. You must unlock the phone.
