I don't want to get down in the weeds with you here again Frannie, but there are many localized versions of lengua de Espana, but the newbie is likely to be looking at commercial language programs like Pimsleur or Rosetta leaning formal Spanish. Not the bastardized version popular among the putas.
And no, I don't believe Domincans can't understand "the TV news in their own country" That's just silly! Hey they can even understand me :)
More on topic, have you gotten laid in Sosua recently? Tell us about that!
I don't think there is any reason to think that the Spanish of Pimsleur or Rosetta will not be understood. I originally learned Spanish from compact discs and was understood. If you speak to people like doctors and teachers in Sosua you will be understood, and also by sex workers. Obviously they will not speak back at you in exactly the same style of Spanish, but so what?
A gentleman does not kiss and tell, but I will note that hardly anyone on these boards ever writes about having sex in massage parlors in Sosua, which can be fun. The upside is that you don't have to pay for a room, the downside is that they don't have proper showers or beds, so you have to have the girl get on top of you on the massage bed, or have her stand on the floor, and you can't make a lot of noise. Anyway, there is something delightfully sleazy about having sex with a cutie while pedestrians walk past a few feet away, or someone else is getting a massage on the other side of a screen. I hesitate to mention any exact names or locations, because you never know who is reading these boards and I don't want to get anyone into trouble, but if you were leaving the front door of the New Garden hotel, you could turn to either the left or the right and get laid within 150 yards.
