What I was asking Bart1 for is a boots-on-the-ground report of what he's seeing & sensing in Centro at night, not bullet points from a safety handbook like be vigilant, keep your head on a swivel, etc.
I'm sure The Tall Man & his street savvy buddy weren't showing bling or unaware of their surroundings when they were surrounded by 6 thugs with knives a couple months ago. This happened near Conejitas shortly after midnight.
If anyone can contribute recent experiences, good or bad, about Centro & its bars at night that would be great.

Leave the nice watches at home. You don't need to impress chicas, they want your cash, not your hand in marriage. Don't flash cash and don't leave your cell sitting on the table or on the passenger seat (or between your legs) in the car (yup, I know guys who have had them stolen from between their legs, while driving). I carry a photocopy of my passport in my pocket, the original is in the hotel safe, along with a credit card and some cash (enough to get me out of the country if everything goes to shit).
I have a 'naughty' phone (for dating) and my regular phone. If I am certain that everyone back at home is OK for a few hours, I leave that phone in the safe, too.
If I have a chica to my room, I have all the cash I need for her stashed somewhere and everything of value (including my laptop and everything that can identify me, like luggage tags) in the safe. I take the dry cleaner tags (with my name and home phone number) off my shirts.
Know where you are going. Memorize the directions. Don't pull out a map on the street. Use GPS, if you have to. Don't look like a clueless tourist on the street.
My Spanish sucks. So, when I am out in the open, I don't speak.
In cities with lots of caucasians (Buenos Aires, Medellin, etc.) as long as no one hears my Spanish, they have no idea I am not a local.
I don't wear any clothing that might identify me as a tourist (no branded stuff unique to the USA). I don't over dress for business stuff (I wear off the rack as opposed to my custom suits). They key is to blend in.
I might sound paranoid, but it allows me to really relax and enjoy myself.

I'd say after dark the blocks around Conejitas are much sketchier then the block around Maricabo and Barra Ejectiva, even though they are only a few blocks apart, much scarier vibe towards Conejitas. I only hit the redlight blocks in daylight also. The bars themselves have been safe enough once you are inside.
Haven't had any problems yet, one drunk old dude did wave a small knife at me & Pollo Negro while we were walking from Conejitas to BarraEjectiva after midnight. He was pretty drunk though and we just ignored him. 2 street chicks in Plaza Botero did try to pickpocket me but got nothing.
Compared to place I have been when I lived in Washington DC back in the late '70's though Centro seems like freaking Disneyland. Compared to my time in Kandahar it seems real safe too but that ain't saying much. LOL.
I'd say if you speak some Spanish and have lived in bad neighborhoods in the US and abroad and dress to blend in you will be most likely be OK, if you lived in a gated suburban community in the US and dress nice and look like a easy mark I'd stay and party elsewhere.
