You effectively lost about 12 bucks for the transaction at Servibanca. It doesn't seem like a lot of money until you realize you're paying $12 per transaction which is insane.

Cash advance fees from credit cards are exorbitant as a general rule, unlike a debit card. Typically it involves a flat fee (often around $10), regardless of where you make the withdrawal on your credit card. And if the amount is drawn in a foreign currency, there are conversion fees, as well. Furthermore, the rate of interest for cash advances is also higher than the already exorbitant rate of interest that you are already being charged for regular purchases. At a time when savings accounts yield less than 2% APR, how does a bank justify interest rates in the high single digits? But, I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir on that point. In summary, avoid making a cash withdrawal on your credit card at all costs, or you will incur "all costs".

In the old days, there were American Express offices in major foreign cities where the cardholders could go and get a cash advance on their card accounts at a modest fee. If you held AMEX travelers checks, the exchange rates were among the best. In any case, Amex no longer has any offices in Thailand, Colombia or much of anywhere else, whereas they were ubiquitous in foreign capitals and business centers all the way through the 90's.

Why can't you withdraw cash from your bank account back home using a debit card? Some banks credit unions don't charge fees at all when you maintain certain minimum balances. Many guys have accounts with the Schwab brokerage, it's very popular and also has several no fee ATM usage deals. The fee you paid is very high.

I've never figured out why people take an advance on a credit card, unless they are in an emergency situation and that is their only option. Not only does he get hit with the $10 fee, he also has to pay interest on that money until he repays it.

Had a brief respite from work and this trip was a toss up between Medellin & San Jose. I was last in SJO about 8 years ago and was tempted to take a look again. Finally decided on MDE and below is a short report of my 7th trip.

I have always stayed in Poblado during my previous trips and was ready for a change. During this trip I stayed in Laurales at the San Peter based on recommendations in this thread. The location is fantastic with ATMs, supermarkets and pharmacies located in the vicinity. Great dining options in the neighborhood too. Local style, Lebanese, Italian, Indian, Vegan, fruit salad & coffee shops. Laurales is a great neighborhood and I enjoyed walking around during the Feria de Flores days. The front desk staff at San Peter are great and the Superior rooms are great. No chica fees and the views from the top floors are lovely.

I have stayed at the Mansion before, the last time being about 3 years ago. I have built a decent FB amiga list over the past few years and, as usual, was planning to spend all my time with my FB cuties. I left it in a ATM machine. My backup was American Express and a Visa credit card. In Colombia, you cannot get a credit card advance from a bank. I tried 2 banks and was told the same thing. It was a government thing. I was fortunate that my hotel agreed to advance me money from my Amex card though they charged a 5% fee. They said that was break even for them and I have no reason not to believe it. But it wasn't enough. I had no alternative, or none that I knew of, but to use my Visa in the ATM machines. It was over $10 per transaction. Roughly $10 from my credit card company and then the ATM fee. Lesson learned. I don't think I will ever leave my card in a machine again.

So I'll be in Mde this week. I have fun contacts but before I explore the hard work I have put in I want to get a sure thing. Any vets have a recommendation on a duo that is all out porn star type fun. We all know 3 some can just be flat out a waste of money. I waited in line for about 10 minutes inside a Bancolombia, and tried to take out a cash advance with a bank teller for $1,000. I was politely told it's not allowed at all banks in Colombia. You have to use the ATM's.

Also, using my debit card is not an option as Chase Bank, last I checked, has a block on all transactions in Colombia. I considered buying Colombian pesos from Chase prior to my trip, but the exchange rate was around 2700 pesos / or about 5-7% worse than when what I'm getting from the ATM's.

The option of bringing dollars & exchanging in Colombia for pesos is a no-go given their rates are around 2700 (last I checked). Not to mention the "giving blood" process that that is.

The $10 fee to my credit card company could be worse. I have other credit cards that charge more. As for the higher interest rate on the cash-advance balances, I don't pay that as I monitor my credit card balances, and post full-payments the same day the cash advance posts.

I guess if I decide to go to Colombia regularly I will get a Schwab account, or get a better bank for debit cards in Colombia.
