I am in need of a bit of help and info.

I have been invited to Kazan at the end of this month, I think I have some where to stay but I wont know for defiant for a few days. Is it a good place to go, by the way I do not have a word of Russian.

Does anyone know if there is any action and the cost. And would I survive.

i am admittedly not as well-travelled as some of the members of the board and much of the lurking public, my excursions into the hinterland being limited to such porn meccas as kaliningrad, ekaterinburg, dnepropetrovsk and a few other cities or any of those nameless suburbs out beyond the last metro stations of moscow’s immense sprawl.

fortunately i was going to novosibirsk though, and even though novosibirsk didn’t conjure up the kind of images of wild debauched sex that tomsk does, it certainly didn’t sound as depressing as kaliningrad either, and even there i had managed to get laid.

arranging a place to stay in novosibirsk wasn’t as easy as i had hoped. there was some trade fair going on at the time and the major hotels, all originally and descriptively named such as hotel sibir, hotel ob and hotel novosibirsk, were either full, very overpriced or too shabby to stay in. there was also the hotel security issue to be considered, so i actively sought an apartment. my search for an apartment inadvertently led me to siberian scarlett, a scarlett johannsen look-a-like i had met on the net. she pointed me towards a few other hotels which looked interesting, but were also fully booked due to the trade fair.

even though i couldn’t find a room through any of these links, the good part was that i had met scarlett johannssen, whom i had being meaning to chat up since i first saw lost in translation.

eventually though i tracked down an apartment agent or office which can be found at this website: [url]http://www.hotelsib.ru[/url] and booked one of their “deluxe” apartments, ending up on ul.lenina, one of the town’s main drags together with krasny prospekt and voksalnaya magistral.

ul.lenina runs from the train station straight to ploshad lenina, which is the center of the city. however the street also continues beyond the train station away from the center, and i was located on this part. although not ideally located, it still wasn’t a bad location.
the apartment was fine, a bit below moscow standard for serviced apartments and certainly way below kiev in which serviced apartments are really the only way to go, but also overpriced at $120 a night. oh well.

Planning a trans siberian trip (not sure if I'm starting in east or west yet) later this year. I want to take it slowly stopping along the way at the "best" places and I am looking for recommendations from fellow ISG travellers.

I just got back from a fairly uneventful 3 day tour of Kaliningrad. Although still essentially a dump, Kgrad has seen some improvements as Moscow money is now flowing into the city. Apparently one of Moscow Lushkov's cronies is now running the show in Kgrad.

Anyway, I stayed in Hotel Dona, which is nice but not particularly cheap at 90 €/night. This seems pretty standard for Kgrad though, as there aren't many hotels to choose from.

There are NO working girls at Hotel Dona, nor is their a security doorman to help you find one. I took girls back to my room, but they were the freebie type. No questions were asked by the girls working the desk.

I didnt find any p4p, but didnt look either. I know it is occassionally available at Planeta, a restaurant/casino/night club complex near the hotel. I was also told that there is some street action near the City Theatre in the center, but never checked it out personally.

Night clubs I can recommend:

Planeta: This club is good for in-week action, they are always open.
Matrix: Good on the weekends, young crowd, mostly techno-type music.
Vagonka: In my opinion the best club. Only open on weekends.

Restaurants that are good:

Zaria: nice and modern, international cuisine
12 Stulov (12 chairs): cosy and nice, international cuisine
Dolce Vita: located adjacent to the Hotel Dona, good food, nice atmosphere

Generally speaking Kaliningrad is dark and a bit dirty, roads are a disaster... but that's rural EE, take it or leave it. Went to the beach (Svetlagorsk), looked like it could be nice in the summer, but certainly not as nice as other beach areas, particularly Odessa in Ukraine.

Girls were nice looking and fairly easy... or at least interested in foreigners, but isnt that true of everywhere in EE?

I really wonder what these girls have to go through sometimes. So yeah, she was happy to be with a foreigner who treated her decently.

Anyway, I still don't see any reason to head to Kaliningrad as a mongering tourist, there are better and more interesting places in my opinion. I admit I havent explored p4p options there and that club action (freebies) is quite good... but you dont have to go to Kgrad for that.

On some sites like Cupidbay, there's many russian women from Kazan, Yoshkar-Ola and Cheboksary. Most of them absolute stunners. I'm very tempted to do my first trip to Russia in this area. There's a Austrian Airlines direct flight to Kazan, which is big plus.

From what i understand, there's lot of Oil and Gas foreign companies investing in Tatarstan, and I wonder if Kazan is an expensive place (hotels, apartments, cost of life, P4P, ect), and if regular girls are still approachable or already "spoiled" by foreign guys travelling on business.

prosal... can't speak about the costs, but one visa will cover you whereever you go in the country over 11 time zones. BUT, a single entry visa does not allow you to leave the country and return even on the "same" trip and a double entry tourist visa must have all travel completed within 30 days.

I spent most of last year living in Chelyabinsk, not the worst place in the world by a long stretch but not exactly paradise.

Could'nt be bothered to check every post back there but the search threw up nothing so I shall do my little bit for anyone out there/going there, I know there are quite a few US/ other westerners out there.

Well, as you probably know from your Russian research, the nice easy way to get a girl is to go hire yourself a sauna (pronounce sow-na) and then ask the little old lady in charge for the girls (Dye-voo-shki) and watch the parade.

Definately a mixed bag in Chel. with prices a little higher than a home visit- expect to pay 800roubles plus.

Home visits are cheaper, you will need a modicum of Russian though, and a paper called Toom-ba, available from any roadside magazine stall. Turn to the back pages for a large selection of numbers, and if you can say "ya hachoo dye-voo-shka" and your address you're in business. Prices are usually 600-800 roubles for an hour, but to be honest most girls are none too attractive!

But the best for last.... (Well if you are going to pay that is)

Go to a nightclub called "Panta Rey", it is in the centre a short walk from Revoloution Square, everyone knows it, very popular. Inside, along with the usual dance club and restaurant, is a nice strip zone (well that's usual too), with some beautiful girls who get fully naked- quite rare for Chelyabinsk.

Well, the best part is they are all for sale!!! Just go back to the Cloakroom, where you have to pay your fee to go to the strip club anyway, and tell them you want to go upstairs to the "Inteem zone" and pay your fee. My Russian friend negotiated for us and we paid 1000 roubles or I think 1500, to be honest I think we could have got it for cheaper- there was certainly negotiating room, then up we went and got a parade of our strippers for our delectation.

Kgrad has changed much in the last two years because of some heavy renovations done for the anniversary and when Mr putin visited the enclave. Who knows what influence the new govenor Mr Boos will have?

Still its the dump of Russia and the average montly income is only USD 78 per capita. In russia in general its about 90 (2003). So there should be good options for freebie girls in Kgrad. They have a difficult situation getting away and they most of the times cant afford to go to mother russia and are not allowed to go to neighbour EU countries without an expensive visa. The make living conditions even worse the electricity is twise the price as in other parts of russia because the wires go trough Lithuania.

Im in a group of business people so I hope I will get some freedom.
