I would really like to move to Rio in the next six months, I would be coming on a student visa and switching over to an investor Visa after a couple years. The problem I'm running into is that it seems like you have to have proof of employment and two Brazilian co-signers with the financial backing to cosign for you. I have enough assets to retire on and probably won't work for a year or two except for investment income. From what I'm reading it seems almost impossible to rent an apartment without cosigners and definitely without a job even if I have plenty of assets to pay my rent 100 times over. For those ex-pats living in Rio what did you do? There is the option of Airbnb but there's no way I'm doing that it's way overpriced for more than a few weeks stay. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

What I really liked was the 60,000 pt sign up bonus which paid for $600 worth of nights at 5-star Bangkok & Jakarta Hotels at the time. But I canceled my card after I used all my points due to the $95/ year annual fee and the fact that I was just not using the card enough to justify the annual fee.

My everyday card of choice is the Capital One Venture Card with 2% pts on all purchases. That comes with an annual fee too, but the pts is simple to calculate and even simpler to use for reimbursements on any purchase. ANY PURCHASE.

In any case, I think the Schwab Debit card with no annual fees and no minimum checking balance requirements is still numero uno for cash disbursements abroad. The big risk is losing the card somehow while on the road. My back up is to bring along $1000 to $2000 cash reserves plus my regular Wells Fargo Debit Card which will charge ATM fees, ect, ect. But I will only use the WF Debit Card in an emergency because no matter what happens I want to keep the party going when I am on the road.

Wells Fargo has the same thing with their Premiere checking account and so does Morgan Stanley. Only bank I know that waive your ATM fees worldwide with no requirement, and doesn't charge you a monthly maintenance fee is CS.
