I guess either you or Bravo must be wrong, as it seems impossible for the terma B & W to be smack dab in the middle of a favela, and at the same time not be situated inside a favela.

Bonsucesso isn't a favela. Bonsucesso is a bairro. Within this bairro lies several favelas. The terma doesn't lie inside a favela. It wouldn't be very good to put a terma inside a favela...
Almost every bairro in Rio have favelas. If you want to avoid favelas completely you will not have many options where to go.
Anyway, if you think Bonsucesso can be dangerous, then don't go there. It as simple as that.

Sperto is correct, the terma is not directly inside the favela, but it is in a barrio that is surrounded by them. If you want an accurate response of whether its dangerous or not, I have a simple technique. Ask any regular brasilian whether its safe to travel to Bonsuccesso and watch their reaction!!!
I happen to know a guy at the money exchange place I go to, who lives two blocks away from B/W terma. Once I heard and saw his reaction about going to bonsuccesso, I decided to take my ass back to 4x4!!!
It is my fifth visit to the Marvelous City. This time I am armed with a better command of the Brasilado (sp? ) language. And it paid dividends immediately. It really makes the experience so much better to be able to have simple dialogue with the ladies.

The best thing I would recommend you doing, is to get the phone number of the terma. (the one listed on the google map for B/W is incorrect) Once you have the phone number, call them and find out if Luana is working that day. If she is working that day, then take a cab to and from the terma.
Maybe one of the guys on this board who lives in Rio can supply the phone number of the Black and White terma.

If you ask a carioca who lives in bairro X if bairro Y is safe, the carioca most certainly will tell you that Y is a bad neighbourhood and very dangerous.
If you ask a carioca living in bairro Y about bairro X, this carioca will tell you that bairro X is very unsafe.
If you ask a gringo living in Rio if bairro X or Y are dangerous, he will tell you that both are war-zones. Many gringos living in Rio suffers from paranoia.
What you should do is ask a carioca living in bairro X if bairro X is dangerous.
Cariocas working with tourists will most certainly tell you that most bairros in Rio are unsuitable for you. A gringo outside Copacabana is where he isn't supposed to be.
