Warning! Danger Will Robinson! Danger!
Always have a full color COPY with you, and your original safely hidden in your hotel room.
The risk of losing your original passport (you are basically screwed if you lose it) is so severe, its usually greater than the problems presented of not having your original passport on you should LE stop you for something.
Right near Soi 7 there is Kodak shop and the guy will make a nice color copy of your passport and all the latest pages, and it doesn't cost much either
When making copies of you passport or other documents with sensitive personal information, please remember that all modern copy machines are essentially computers with memories that keep the image of you documents on their memories and / or hard drives. So anything you copy on a commercial or large scale public copier is stored on its hard drive.
There has been incidents in the past few years where old discarded machines were dumped at landfills and hackers were able to salvage the memories stored on these drives. If my memory serves me, a law firm in CA was essentially blackmailed for all the confidential client data that was left on their old copier. It had over 10 years of documents stored in the internal memory of the copier!
