Thats exaggerating the opposite way a bit too far.
I know a very decent hard-working Thai girl chef.
She doesn't have a very large large number of Thai friends in Australia because a lot of the other Thais she meets aren't good enough in character, even when not P4P. Too many selfish spoiled rich kids who don't know how to work, never feel Greng Jai, etc.

A lot of Thais are students or restaurant workers these days.
But of the ones brought in by Farangs and now married to Farangs in my country, its reasonable to assume that a fair percentage may have once been in P4P. Obviously I don't know statistics as usually this sort of thing is supposed to be secret, and I definitely don't want to know since some of these girls now have a chance to lead a normal life without too much "bargirl" talk going around.

But its up to the girl how she behaves.
Staying sober is a very important part of hiding the "bargirl" look.
I once went to a birthday party where I was incredibily embarassed by flamboyant behaviour of some Thai/Laos girls that sought of said to me "definte ex-bargirl". Fortunately I know better than to go these types of parties now.

Been there, done that. One of the reasons we don't go to Thai parties outside of Thailand. Put a few drinks, especially if they are free, in these girls and it's just like being in Patpong or Beach Road all over again.

Maybe its their religion, maybe its their sense of fate, maybe its their culture, maybe its being a woman in a very patriarchal world or maybe they have just learned to separate what they do from who they are. The ones who get lost in drugs, alcohol and anger are the ones who can't I would guess.

As to sponsoring a woman at home - hah! One, I could never afford it, two, I have none of the same sense of empathy I have for girls from Thailand and third - though we often complain about how business like the girls in Thailand are getting its nothing compared to girls in the US where you better have your pants on when the time is up. I haven't gone with a girl here in a very long time but my past experiences were pretty awful. Never again.

I know two girls that I met way back in 1992 who are still in the game. One I have stayed in touch with fairly constantly because I consider her a friend and we have lunch and see movies together occasionally but no longer get intimate. Its been interesting seeing her life flash by - started out at 18 working in Pussy Galore in Patpong - tiny and incredibly cute - was a swimsuit girl meaning she never got on stage but just mingled with the clients - and over the years she has jumped around - worked the Japanese bars for years - retired - bought her apt. - came back for a while - then quit again and opened a restaurant - had a child - restaurant failed and she came back in the biz - now she is trying to put together another business that will allow her to get out for good. Though still cute but a little heavier, at 35 she knows her days are coming to a close as a bar girl and she worries about what comes next. But she is eternally optimistic and cheerful and tells me whats the point of life without fighting every day for something to call your own.

The other girl was one of my very very first - took her out of Pretty Woman I think it was on the second floor of Nana - way way back - she was right off the farm - no English, no idea about sex, was terrified of doing a bj, had to wrestle the sheets off her - but an absolutely bouncy sweet personality that got me to go with her 4-5 times over two trips. Never saw her for many years until 3 years ago I came across her in the Nana Hotel lobby - she immediately recognized me and remembered my name - and oddly I remembered hers - oddly because now she looks 50 though she must be mid-thirties at most and her life has no where to go - living on the generosity of drunks. She is always on the verge of being broke and in tears and I find it impossible not to give her a few thousand baht from time to time. I am not really sure why since I was only a customer and nothing more - but seeing her breaks my heart and makes me remember when both she and I were much younger.

Girls or business, you may never forget, that it is a very different mentalitity in thailand. Having done some business in Thailand, I feel, they do not take it so accurate with the truth - f.e. concerning money -as we do it in europe. (Many of my business partners kept (small) amounts of the money, having speciuos excuses, but it was never worth having a big argument..., but it added up)

My conclusion, in general: A "little lie" is not the same matter in Thailand as it is in the western world.

I met a very, very nice working girl in bangkok, spend unforgettable moments with her but couldn't stay with her. It hurt. Comparing her to a western girl, I'm sorry to say, I did not trust her. (+ I would never ever think of sponsoring a western working girl). I am not saying, that all thaigirls are like that. My lession: go for the whole thing - stay with her, take her with you or leave the whole thing being a nice memory. But I wasn't courageous enough. Don't sponsor, it doesn't work, makes you worry to much. But maybe I am just talking smart, because everything changes, when you fall in love.

Well, she's not my girlfriend but my gig, I see her casually despite the fact that she has a sponsor (who lives overseas). I have thought about leaving her out of respect for the guy but she would just replace me with another guy (she also has a Thai Boyfriend/gig/brother) and, she's really pretty so I try to have fun with her while I can.
