i forgot to mention one weird experience that i had. thankfully i stayed at a hotel that required the girls to leave their i'd at the desk (the dawin) this really reduces the chance of a bad experience in my opinion.
one night i came across a stunning freelancer on the sidewalk in front of strikers. as a general rule, the further down soi 4 you go from nana plaza, the quality of the girls diminish. usually 4's, 5's and 6's in this area. so i asked her age and if she had i'd for the hotel. she said 19 and yes she had i'd. so off we go. got to the dawin and she has no i'd! she explains to the girl at the desk that she had just been pulled over for driving a scooter illegally and the police took her i'd. the desk lady told me she couldn't go to my room. we leave and she tells me that her apartment is around the corner and she will show me her i'd there.
i knew this was something bad happening, so i wanted to see where it was going. while we were walking she was texting nonstop. i felt a setup in the making, but not sure what setup, so wanted to see more. we went down a few alleys trying to find her apartment. yes, she had no idea where her apartment was. all this time constant texting back and forth with someone. finally got to her apartment, but it was actually an hourly guesthouse. she told me it was 300 baht for 2 hours. the lady at the desk handed me a yellow post-it note and told me to write my name slowly. the look in her eyes when she said "slowly" gave me a shiver down my spine. at this point i had had enough. i just walked away.
walking away trying to figure out what her scam was i came to 2 conclusions. first, she was under 18 and the texts were to the police to get her a reward for arresting me. second, she would try and extort me for money once in her room for whatever reason she came up with. maybe she would call the police and say i was violent with her? maybe she would say i raped her? who knows. all i know is that would have been one downward spiral of a night if it weren't for my hotel checking i'd's.
be safe out there. there are many great freelancers out there, but if something feels wrong, just walk away.
