1. HIV is only one of the many STDs and indeed, the former can and often is transmitted non-sexually. The other diseases are encountered more often than the "scary" HIV.
2. Paranoia: During the late 80's up to late 90's, I visited Bangkok perhaps 40 times. The scare was palpable and yet looking at the CIA factbook numbers, one needs to laugh at all the scare mongering that went on, certainly so compared to Southern Africa.
3. With all due respect to CIA fact book, in many countries of the third world, including India, the information is not so trustworthy, given the public posture towards STDs and so take those numbers with a grain of salt.
4. I believe it is possible to be judicious, avoiding intravenous drug use and homosexuality probably lowers the risk very substantially. Interestingly, serious drug usage among women in Sosua is low to my understanding (but then I do not do drugs, of any kind), not to speak of the general societal stigma on drugs.
Summary: It is important to be careful but if one is so scared, one better had not left his bed at home and even then one may not be that safe. Sink holes and meteorite hits are just waiting to happen. LOL!

If you don't like Sosua, stay away from the Sosua forum. It seems pretty simple to me. The following is not a dis but to make a point. I've been once several years ago, and didn't like it, paid extra to change my flight home to a day earlier than I was booked. So I have no interest in Sosua or reading about it. So I never go back to the Sosua forum, but went tonight out of sheer boredom (I'm taking an online defensive driving course and I need something else to switch to for most of the time, and Sosua was on top of the recent updates list).
Get a life people, no need to rag on other guys who enjoy their trips and their lives. Enjoy whatever other place you travel to and stay away from this forum.

The point of this post, and my previous one in this forum, is that the eye of a hurricane does not have to pass directly over Sosua or the north coast of the Dominican Republic in order for them to be affected. And there are no magical spells or invisible barriers that protect Sosua and the north coast from hurricanes. If you're planning on visiting the Dominican Republic any year between June 1 and November 30, there is a chance the island will be struck by a hurricane. And truth be told, you don't even need a hurricane to cause problems. We've all seen over the past couple of years the flooding that occurred in Sosua and the surrounding area from heavy thunderstorms. Imagine how bad it would be if a weak tropical depression or tropical storm became stationary over Sosua and dumped heavy rain for a few days, a situation similar to this:

I've been making an annual trip to Sosua for about ten years, and I can't say that it's really changed. There are lots of available girls for all tastes. The skin-tight body suits are new, and somewhat more girls were up for anal this year. I consistently paid 1500 pesos (32 dollars). Twice I paid 2000 for something a little extra on a weekend night, and once 1000. Before I take them home, I ask them whether they like to kiss (te gusta besar?) and BBBJ (te gusta por la boca sin condón? Then I tell them I'll pay 1500, only at the end, and they usually say, "Let's go!" I had girls extended ST to LT without charging me. I let them know either you go out in the rain or I keep fucking. That's simple. Most will choose to stay.
