But if you ask a motoconcho to drop you off at La Passion, he'll take you to the building, even though it's been closed like forever!

They have their own names for these places that stick. The name City lights lasted a year, Hotel Sosua Sunrise only a little longer.

New tourist names come and go but all they are doing is re-arranging furniture, as far as locals come and go. All they want to know is who is hiring.

We can find the bars and the hotels, whatever they call them today. All we want to know is your observations like "The beach and the drag are choke full of girls". Yep! That would be the weekend!

On Wednesday a newbie was reporting that it was very quiet on Monday and Tuesday, and he was disappointed. I suggested it was a slow time of the week at a slow time of the season, and check it out on the weekend! Our resident "100 percenter" took issue with that, too, but then he's seriously fucked up! His mileage does vary. Puta can see him coming for a mile! .

As long as "the beach and drag are chock full of girls", as Questner reports, it's a monger's paradise, and we'll enjoy it to the max.

But when you see major money coming in like the International Gansvoort Ocean Club, that a game changer. They are expecting the politicians to clean the place up, which wouldn't take more than one lit match to clear the whole main street. Mysterious fires are usually the first indicators of major changes to come :)

But that would take years, and I'm not worrying about it, but lets say we get high end beach front Development, a tarted up pedestrian main street with real jewellers, amber, tourist galleries and stuff, fine restaurants for you Tempo, (at finer prices) it will probably open up the market for some local bars in La Union, Charamicos, Abajo. Keep the red light areas away from the big money, but not too far away!

So Los Charamicos, the new Sosua? They are "my people". They need the work!

DR Tourism is way up and Sosua is a popular spot! A little uptick in the US and Canadian economies will help.

The hotels are trying to max out the market. A renovated strip of hotels and condos on Playa Imbert, Calle Bruno Philip out past the Casa Marina, along with that new World Class Gansvoort Ocean Club development.

Casa Marina just finished a major reno, Casa Valeria has expanded, renovated and added new rooms, the old Casa Cayena has renovated and Bailey's is now Captain Bailee Hotel and Restaurant. Yes, they are now offering hotel rooms, along with their great fish and pizza. There are at least a couple more being built that don't yet have names.

The strip and the beach are "choked" with girls" according to the latest report.

Conrtary to that private "intel", "sources on the street", Haitian connections, chickenman spying, and the other James Bond and Sopranos wannabe's, Sosua is NOT dead!

All joking aside, good eye on your part. The probability of sustained hurricane winds is indeed 20 to 30% per the National Hurricane Center. But the probability of sustained tropical storm force winds in Sosua is 70 to 80%. And at 2 pm this Thursday, Irma is going to be just off the north coast with sustained winds of 120 knots (about 140 mph) with higher gusts. So Sosua is likely looking at strong winds with damage, heavy rain with flooding, and power outages later this week. If Irma shifts a little farther south and goes right over Sosua and Puerto Plata, you can kiss those towns goodbye for the foreseeable future.

And after the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Irma is likely going to go straight north through Florida and the east coast of the United States. Anyone having a connecting flight to Sosua, especially through Florida, is probably looking at flight delays and cancellations later this week.

The North Coast does indeed have a Hurricane Deflector Shield. It is neither magic nor invisible. It is called the Northern Cordillera. It has carried out that function very successfully for 100 years. No-one has said that it is impossible that a hurricane should make landfall on the North Coast. The fact that it happened around 1907 proves that it is possible. But the rarity also proves it is extremely unlikely.

The hurricane is turning north a little, not south. All is going as forecast.

I am not sure what you mean by "kiss those towns goodbye for the foreseeable future". Puerto Plata is a working city, not a holiday camp like Sosua, and would be up and running within three or four days however bad the flooding. It is also better built and drained so can withstand high winds and run-off better. Leave that sort of ungrounded hysterical comment to Fox News.

This means that the north coast of the Dominican Republic is now under a greater threat from Irma. In fact, as I type this, the entire north coast is under a Hurricane Warning. And at 2 PM this Thursday, Irma will be a powerful Category 4 hurricane just offshore Sosua and Puerto Plata with maximum sustained winds of 140 knots (160 mph). And regarding a Category 4 hurricane, this is what the National Hurricane Center has to say, direct from their own website:

"Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and / or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months."

So if you think Puerto Plata will be up and running within three or four days after experiencing a Category 4 hurricane, you've definitely been hitting the sauce a little too hard.

But I get it, Charles, Irma is approaching and you're stressed, and it shows in your response to me. I just hope you've diverted some of that meager pension you're living on down there on the north coast to pay for the inevitable repairs you're going to have to make to your homestead. Unfortunately, the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center still has Irma moving west at 15 mph. This means that the National Hurricane Center will probably have to ease the forecast track of Irma just a little farther south. So the scenario of Irma making landfall around Punta Cana as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, and then going right along the north coast of the Dominican Republic from Samana to Sosua to Puerto Plata to Luperon is NOT outside the realm of possibilities right now.

Good information on topic is crucial, but often opinions are substituted for facts on the ground. It would be easy to add "IMHO" to such posts and everyone would be happy.

If we could respectfully add to, or correct the information posted here, without the name calling, we would all be better served.
