He is right
Sometimes wandering around with monger buddies is alot riskier than going about it solo. Two gringos are more appealing to rob than just one. Add one more to the mix and you are looking at a monumental heist.
In reality you just need someone to pal around with and exchange info on the downtime. What else can your buddy do for you that a chica can't?
IMHO the worst thing you can do in NOT monger solo in sketchy places. Locals give you more credit by going it alone and you aren't responsible for anybody's actions. Just your own.
The only exceptions might be a gringo infested monger location like Sosua DR which is more of a frat party than anything else. When you go into the bowels of grit and grime ditch the amigo and go incognito or don't go. A friend will do you no good.
There has been one or two mongers I've gone around with but those were ISG members that I had alot of trust in.
Might I also mention that 2/3 gringos "Looks" confrontational. You may not want it to look that way but "locals" may percieve it as such. Add latino machismo and a few drinks and you get a bad mix.
I was in med for 2 months.
I know people that have been robbed and.
It doesn't matter how tough or big you are and you are.
And more likely be hit up in a group of gringos, one heist =larger reward, a group also sticks out, I go it alone and maybe it looks like I live there. I am prepared to loose everything, but would weep if I lost my camera and mem card.
No shorts, no ingles, no sandals. Lo pro and taxi.
I do go alot of places with my paisa friends that feels better. Peace and buena suerte.
Nope, toured the world for 30 years and never had one.

That is exactly what I meant.
Got tired of over paying for average place to stay. Found real hotels in Laurelas where they treat you like a guest.
I don't like hotels. It's like a walk of shame every time you walk by the reservation desk with a different paisa every couple of hours! Also, a lot of families check into hotels.
In an apartment, it's much quieter. I have yet to see many of my neighbors.

Yet you have someone watching your back. You can't have your eyes everywhere. When one is in the bathroom, the other can watch the drinks. When you're out in a sketchy area, one can look left and the other can look right.
Two gringos are more appealing, but it also requires 2-3 guys to rob you. When you are solo, that opportunistic robbery is more possible with one guy. Locals won't give you more credit for being brave. They think your'e just a stupid gringo.
I actually haven't seen the latin machismo in all the places I went where they drink. They all seem really nice and low key. However, I have seen the gringo machismo. Especially the gringos that get rowdy in Fase II. Cheering and yelling. Most won't look twice at a group of gringos unless they get rowdy!
Yes. Going solo is the way to go.
That is exactly what I meant.
I wouldn't say going solo is 'the way to go'. Period. It just depends man.
Yes, IMO going solo is better than hanging with a bunch of loud, dumb-asses or even one dumb-ass for that matter.
If you have a trusted companero, however, going out as a team works pretty well. And that extra guy with ya, I believe will put the bad guys at bay a bit.
To say that the locals respect you because you go out solo is silly really IMO. I don't think they could care less. The banditos, however, know that it's much easier to sneak up on and overcome just one guy solo.common sense.
Bueno, everybody has their game-plan that works best for them, and going solo isn't always the best for all.

Proper Attire Required!
Each time I'm here,I cringe when I see these guys in the shorts and sandals. It may "fly" in Cartagena, (since it's the beach), BUT please stop wearing that shit in Medellin! I myself wont hang with people dressed here like that, i don't like to be that noticable.

I should say this, probley the reason is because I have no friends, and I prefer female company!

Guy's,
If anybody would like to donate a bag of food from Exito (20,000 pesos) to poor families here in Medellin, I'm the man to see, go buy it and drop it of at the Mansion, you can even come up with me and the Police to drop it off if you like.
I told the Police that I'll go up with them but only in a tank !!!!
Even if you hate my guts, thats ok but we got to help fathers/mothers and there children, the family unit.
Aussie Greg.

Ken Apples was Lucky,
I have reported problems in Medellin in the past and no one from what I can see is listening to me. I still see gringos in shorts and sandalls talking loud and high fives everywhere. Hoolering in the Casinos. Keep it up and the Ken Apples story will continue to replay itself. I have taken the cab from Fase Dose with the same woman, attractive and sweet and doubtful she was part of the plot. As far as the Taxi drivers not helping, well they most likely had no idea of what was happpening as they would have sought cover or helped out in calling for aid. I have seen taxi drivers come to the aid of victims of crime three times in my life here to the point of getting in the fight. There will always be crime, there will always be vicitms, but Fase Dose is a gringo and mafiaso hang out, my suggestion is to avoid the place. You can see strip clubs at home, just do the daily Casa tour and leave the strip clubs off the tour. I have done all the strip clubs in Centro to San Diego, there just full of incidents waiting to happen. But you guys won't listen to me, so go. And maybe you will overspend, get drugged or robbed, get half ass sex and have a story to tell others of how you survived the whole thing, or maybe you won't.
Ok. There have been so much talking about gringos that and gringos this.
How about Asian mongers? Is there fair amount of Asian guys mongering in Columbia? I'm Asian and never been to Columbia. Any tips? Is there any different in term of treatment from local between Asian and white?
I'm asian. The non-indian kind.
I saw an asian mongering on my last trip at Mansion. I heard Frank was taking a bunch of asians around.
I think they treat everyone the same. I don't really get any extra looks.
BTW, I think when people talk about gringos.. they refer to all extrajeras in general. At least I do.
but Fase Dose is a gringo and mafiaso hang out, my suggestion is to avoid the place. You can see strip clubs at home.
This is my opinion too. Honestly, I've been to Fase Dos, once, I've been in the Maricaibo, El Executivo, many more times, it is not a favorite activity, but it's sometimes fun to be nasty. Also, after two years I have still never been inside a MDE casino. I don't like to gamble, lucky for me.
I would much rather go to the massajes during the day, find favoritas in them, and then have them over to the apartment when they can. I've hooked up with many sweeties from Loutron and Abydos (my two favorite massejes) I also take them to dinner and dancing, on occasion. I also the bars of Le Obolisk when futbol is on, all of the dance clubs on La Sententa to find beauties, and the clubs in Sabaneta like, Jesus, Dulce, Mio and the like are loaded with beautiful women ready to dance and flirt.
I never go to Parque Lleras, or any other Poblado clubs. The poster that got into trouble was in Fase three nights in a row, while he did everything right except take the taxi outside, his main error was creating a pattern.
I've read here time after time, always vary your routine. I always do that, always. Three nights in a row in a high profile spot is what got him.
As for becoming complacent, or too sure that it can never happen to "ME", that's ridiculous. If you are in the wrong place at the right time, your number is up, and in Colombia, that can be a problem.
Chau,
Jazz

Aussie Greg.
I would not agree more. I think every monger should be encouraged to find a good, reputable non profit in the country of their choice, and give a bit. Of course, picking one that lead to actual change would be nice (in the issue of our choosing), but that is your choice. So many great non-profits in Medellin and other cities that need our support.

Just a thought...
Hello guys,
Be careful with drugs being mixed in the drinks by chicas, I invited a girl to my apartment on the last day of my trip, we were drinking and she asked me for glass of ice, I left my drink with her and went to get her some ice, i.e is it !!!!!!, she mixed something that knocked me out, I still cannot remember what happend between 10:00 and 12:00 PM that day. Lucky me , I only had about 100K in my wallet, she stole everything. Not much ! but be carefull with Chicas in Medellin. She told me I lost the money else where, while I was looking for taxi money for her. The apartment did have security and all. She could not leave with my laptop and camera etc.
Just a warning!
With this situation I would also think about inspecting my luggage. Afterall there's nothing like being volunteered to be a mule while you were past out. Granted this sort of smuggling is rare these days, but still being stopped at TSA or customs would be one bad situation with an uncorroborated story. Unless you happen to file a police report.

If someone likes to hang in strip clubs they should know the risk (guy not playing in NFL anymore) As far as ranting and raving about men wearing shorts bull****, . Last several times in Medellin (June & Aug) it was to hot to always wear long pants. I have no had any problems. Seen many men at soccer games, malls, ect in shorts. Yes they were Colombian. Most nights I dress nicer. Called evening attire.
Agreed no one likes obnoxious, high fiving idiots anywhere, but rant about never wearing shorts in my openion is Bunk.
