To clarify, when I wrote this I had in mind venues more like the Biergarten. IMHO, there has been a serious uptick in overall quality. My "theory," if you can dignify it with such a title, was that more of these sorts of venues might crop up. This same sort of venue, with local variations, exists in most countries I've visited. It serves the need of a short-time-centric market without the mega-hassle many of the go-gos have become.

I completely agree with your sentiments about the sewer of lower Suk, and I've never cared for the traditional FL joints like Spasso, et al, for much the same reasons.

If you looked at figures comparing 1999 to 2014 the number would probably be even larger.

Even with a minimum wage up to 300 baht per day now, I'm sure a lot of ladies would prefer to make ten times that for sitting around most of the day doing nothing, as opposed to hard labour in a factory or in the burning sun of rice fields, etc.

There is also the matter of supply & demand. With 2 or 3 times as many tourists coming to LOS in the 2010's compared to 15 years ago, there are probably 2 or 3 times as many tourists looking for sex with Thai P4 P gals.

Moreover the number of other foreigners living in Thailand, such as businessmen & retirees, seeking such "happy ending" services has likely also gone up significantly since 1999.

I'd suggest that if one tracked the estimates of organizations that research prostitution in Siam, you'ld find a huge increase in the numbers of "working girls" since the HIV heyday of the 1990's.

There are plenty of girls just starting as newbies in a bar, who were previously at some street food stand, or similar. The level of customers was very disturbed by all the protests that were going on in Bangkok and outside Bangkok. The economy was not booming. The prices for rubber dropped through the floor. They simply were not getting enough money to make ends meet. Could have been suburb of Bangkok like Minburi or further up country like Suphanburi.

They start in the bar and sometimes only last a short time, as they don't like the work. In other cases, they keep coming back because they are making more money, and they can't do without that. Some are working the bar intermittently to fill in the money gaps. Can they think of some other job, without education that will provide the same bare minimum money needed to pay the bills? No.

Are they the Dregs? Well in terms of lacking a good education, they may be, but this has always been the case. No change there. Are there any good quality girls, for looks and overall character? Yes there are, not always in the same girl though. I don't bother to get to know the real "dregs" in a bar. In my case I would rate 50% of the young bar girls or more as over weight. That is the "dregs" for me. I don't care how well educated they are.

You can clearly see the decline. Thailand has gone from 16.86 births per 1,000 people in 2000 to 12.81/1,000 in 2012. That is a significant drop by any standard. Of course the population as a whole grew. However, as the girls in the industry age out there are far fewer to replace them. This is inarguable. The demographics clearly show that the population in Thailand is aging. It's not as bad as Japan, but it's unmistakable. There are and will be fewer and fewer "P4 P age" girls.

An analysis of Thailand's changing demographics requires looking at birth rates and mortality rates. Birth rates are declining, but the population increases because there is a larger drop in mortality rates. Your first sentence speaks directly to this point. More and more Thais are aging longer and longer. There are fewer young people and more middle age and elderly people in Thailand's growing population.

There are also more and better employment opportunities, at least in Bangkok. One of the ladies I spent considerable time with on the trip I just completed told me she could easily find a job paying B20K a month. She's a smart lady with good English skills but has little formal education. She said this is about how much she budgets for herself to live on in Bangkok; but she went into the P4P industry to send money home to rebuild her families house that was destroyed in a flood.
