First Timers: Don't Neglect Pre-Trip Map Recon
First time in Pattaya. Arrived mid-evening. All in all, I'll take the blame for my disappointing first night experience given low energy level and unfamiliarity with the city layout. (My hotel, which showed as being somewhere in between the south and central areas on the booking site map, turned out to be on North Pattaya. F* me!) Hoping to do better today, and will check out Soi 6.
If you've never been to Pattaya, it's important to figure out the basic layout *before* you arrive. If you know where things are, you'll be able to book lodging in a place that's centrally located. You'll also be able to get where you need to go on foot, by baht bus or by motorbike taxi. Most importantly you'll be able to get down to business immediately upon arrival without wasting a bunch of time. Online maps are fine, but I also recommend buying an old-fashioned map that you can look at while you are planning your trip. I like the Groovy map of Pattaya, which I find has just right level of detail. You can buy it from Amazon for about 270 baht plus shipping.
