Carnival is all good...just a tad more expensive
So I'm a 40 some Asian-American guy, overweight guy planning to going to Carnival. What's your experience or seen when it comes to overweight guys and carnival. ...
Was curious if during carnival if the girls will be out so less p4 p or is there an uptick due to the increase traffic. I've found some carnival mentioned but not much discussed.
Hey no worries...I think you're good to go.
Just bring (or have available by way of ATM), a decent amount of money to go with your troubles. It's all good, as having money will (in most cases) solve your P4P dilemmas, whatever the difficulty.
As mentioned, during Carnival time/days, is probably not the best time for mongering. Most businesses tend to shutdown around and over the 4-day period, and a modicum of girls, tend to want to head back home (to wherever) and party with friends and family. That said, there still remains a modest P4P scene around Copa and Centro, if you know where to look. (Note: Things do slowly go back to normal just after Carnival.)
But if you're also very much interested with, taking in the Brazilian culture, food, music, dance (Samba), sights and the arts, then visiting Rio during Carnival time is a good time, and is a great idea. As also mentioned, things will be a tad more expensive, if not slightly more chaotic.
So depending on how you deal with large crowds, large events and boisterous, lively and very colorful sexy people, set the level of your plans (and expectations) accordingly w/r to visiting during Carnival. Similar considerations should also be given, if planning to visit during Christmas and New Years.
Don't forget to read some RODs (Reports of Distinction) for more info and use ISG search functions to help.
Dangers lure in high class places
Using this as a hook to get my thing in and amplify VM info. I wish I had known about VM info 7 years ago when it probably was still better and I was roaming the streets.
VM looks different, but I don't understand what looks scary? Loud funk music, street dogs, half-naked women (OK, some ladies looks scary), smells or run-down buildings? If a newbie is scared then go there around 4 PM.
The first time I went to VM was a Friday night when it was rocking. It reminded me of the bar-scene in the Star Wars movie. Back then there were more girls, better quality, easier to find the gems and a session was 25 reais. I loved VM. Unfortunately I think VM is no longer that interesting considering the quality has gone down.
A first-timer can get familiar with the area using street view on Google maps, just search for "Rua Sotero dos Reis".
You can find VM-maps in this post.

I have lived in favelas and generally feel safe inside. I am much more worried in better neighborhoods when it gets dark and a bit deserted. And now, after 13 years being in and out of Brazil, I finally got to have guns pointed at me and knocked over my head. Where? In the BRT Rio Centro, in this Olympic complex. I was chatting with me ex-GF back-to-being-ho trying to figure out if I would go and see her. Standing alone in the BRT station, only one other passenger there. Suddenly black scumbag demanded I hand over my phone. Pistol pointed at me. I did not comply. I thought I would die that day. But I didn't and lost none of my stuff. I had everything on me that was important to me. Backpack, computer. Money, all papers, passport, ID and credit cards and money. Everything. They could have just shot me and made off with everything. Instead they insisted only one the phone, the last thing I could have given up. Stupid as fuck! They could have asked nicely for money and they would have gotten more than from the black market sale of my phone. They are really dumb people. But I shouldn't be too harsh with my rants, after all they didn't fire at me only knocked with these guns over my head a dozen times or so. I yelled and that startled them and they ended up running off. Then the bus came and I entered along with the other passenger who watched the whole scene without saying one word of support. Surreal.
