I have been searching for the post but can't find it. About a month ago, someone posted some great information on which option to choose if you are paying with a credit card. One of the two (Dollars / reais) was the better deal. Anyone remember the post?

But if you accept conversion then you get a scammy local bank rate. If you decline conversion then your US bank uses spot rate.

Assume this is same for credit card. Decline conversion. Pay in Reals.

So, when you are charging something on your credit card in Brazil, a screen will usually pop up asking if you want to charge your card in dollars of BR. Always choose to be charged in BR. This way your card will be charged in BR and your credit card company will give you the best conversion rate. If you choose to be charged in dollars you are in effect accepting the local bank conversion rate and your card will be charged in dollars.

Always decline the currency conversion. Not only that, but check store receipts even if they don't ask. Some crooked proprietors will try to pull this scam without even telling you.
