Exchanges, prices and pics
i'm thinking you should be be able to get some decent purchasing power presently with the dollar. the exchange window at accra international in the baggage section had one of the better exchange rates.
and yes, lol, i too am wondering if 120 usd is not a tad overkill
agree pete.
currently about 1. 86-1. 89 is the going rate for usd to ghs (new cedi) conversion, see www.oanda.com/currency/converter.
the airport window by the baggage belt has a competitive rate. surprisingly, the exchange at the golden tulip is also good. many independent forex offices have shut in the last year or so. the banks are ok but tend to have less competitive rates. the cost of banking and capital in ghana is very high.
and yes, usd120 is about ghs 220, more than a month's salary for many. girls try to make as much as they can, when they can as it's insecure and prices are rising all over the place. charcoal for cooking most food has gone up by 30% and more in the past six months, fuel is on the up, all food is rising. so are hotel and rental costs.
as a benchmark, the girl i met in peers, a bar in dansoman on the western side of accra, was ghs80 for a night / morning-long gfe, plus dinner cooked for me at her place the following night as her guest. and a girl on the beach at la was ghs 60 for a an energetic four hours at a nearby hotel until she was going out to meet her friends for the evening. in both cases, i tipped some extra as it was enjoyment on both sides.
