In conjunction with Tor, you need something to watch the proxy changes like Privoxy which can be downloaded at:

If you use Firefox, there is an extention which makes it simple to switch from using the Proxy to not using it. The extention is called Switchproxy and can be found at mozilla.org.

I think the idea behind Tor is to use multiple proxies to create completely anonymous connections. It also has the added benefit of enabling one to access any website. When in China, I have no problems accessing any site when using Tor.

As long as the comunication between you and the proxy is encrypted your completely in the clear.

This doesn’t mean that anything you do can’t be logged or monitored as the comunication between proxy and website will not be encrypted most of the time. So if you give out any personal data there you can still be traced. The same goes for your email, you have to be very consistent with using a proxy to read your webmail . Don’t give out any data and make sure you never read your mail any other way.

I believe in a country like Dubai (or China, etc.) which wants to restrict a website, it is difficult to give people access from the server side.

This is because those countries which restricts sites will normally have control over the ISP routing and also the DNS servers.

So it is relatively straightforward for them to block access to those IP addresses and domain names which they don't like.

They simply filter it at the ISP side. There isn't must you can do about it because the traffic must pass through the ISP DNS resolve and also routing system.

Anonymizers only make it invisible as to what site you are going to. But it does defeat an ISP blocking access to a site because the DNS simply won't resolve to the site and instead will be redirected to some "site blocked" page.

A web based proxy is simply another website which will act as a name proxy for the forum and will make requests to the forum on behalf of a user. Since the web-based proxy does not live inside the ISP network, it will not be recognized as accessing the forum site by the ISP.

So forum members will need to know the web or IP address of the proxy to access in order to get to the forum.

Of course this becomes a cat and mouse game because the authorities will eventually discover this IP address and block it and you will have to create a new one.

The only way to defeat a good filter on ISP level is to make sure you have encrypted communication between yourself and the service you’re using to browse the web. Simplest solution are either VPN, encrypted proxies or encrypted anonymizers.

The main problem is that its very simple for an ISP to block access to those proxies which in effect renders them useless. But they are the most simplest way to use, as you don’t need to download any additional software.

Other solutions work mostly on basis of some kind of distributed network. Requests you do are encrypted and send from user to user until it reaches its destination. The information is encrypted again and only decrypted when it reaches you. Tor is one example of such an approach. For this you need to download additional software.

Now that [url]www.nntime.com[/url] has been blocked am also using it. It is good but last night it was connecting according to the pop up but I got nowhere in trying open any page. Tonight I am in and its OK and fast. Not a techie either so hope it lasts! Need to download stuff overseas onto CD and install here at home methinks.

Rog - try jap.exe again. After a couple weeks of instability and only one or two servers, it now has multiple servers again and is fast and reliable. I use "testbed for new technology" from the list of about 6 proxies.

Will try as is very slow last time and I could not be that patient. The ultrasurf seems OK at certain times of the day only still. I also have a number of proxy/ports that I use as well but think will try your suggestion as I need a more permanent fix (something akin to me and Miss N at the moment, she is becoming a permanent fix - well until the GF arrives!).

This site works very well.

Going to have to concur with Moody for a couple reason (not all impartial):

1: It is open source which means unlike the other solutions on here, you know its not spyware or a rootkit. Any of you blindly trusting any executable attached on here is asking for trouble.

2: Considering the current tor network consists of a grid of a couple thousand servers wiyh nodes transparently coming and going all the time, I have yet to see a firewall that has blocked it.

3: IAW with #2, I used tor successfully in the UAE, China, various governmental military networks, and a few financial networks (all which have extremely tight security) and works no problem. The MAIN problem for all your firewalled folk is they block access to the tor site so you can't actually download it to get it working. I highly suggest that you have somebody YOUTRUST download it and email it to you, host it, or next time you travel outside your blocked country, just grab a copy.

4: I will claim partiality here as I contribute both fiscally and my personal spare time to this project. Not a developer but one of the various application porters and bug testers.

5: It is extremely transparent to the user and Mum and Dad could use it and install it just fine.

What you are looking for is the win32 tor + privoxy distro (though if you know what the other distro's are and are suitable, by all means use it).

On FreeBSD you can just do: 'pkg_add -r tor-devel' and you will pull it off the main FreeBSD mirror servers as its in the port collection.

Ultrasurf only works with win32 Internet Explorer ... not sure how much of a issue that is for people reading this board but incase you installed it (going to assume you did so on windows) and its not working with Opera or Firefox, thats why. Use tor .. it supports all browsers, all OS's, AND items like bit torrent, IRC, instant messenging, etc etc .. its a full SOCKS solution unlike Ultrasurf.

And yes I say win32 Internet Explorer as it doesn't work for those folk running Internet Explorer on Apple nor those running win64 XP or Vista Internet Explorer .. its a very very limited application.

Ultrasurf works fine in Saudi.

"torpark" has recently been upgraded and works well (occasionally times out, but an extra click or two usually works). Easy to download and use; fast and pretty reliable. Another advantage is you can load it onto a memory stick, pop the stick into any PC (internet cafe etc), and it works externally.

Q: Was it easy to set up? A: Yes and No. For my Home PC, I downloaded the software, unzipped it onto a USB key drive (it takes only 32Mb), fired up the software and 30sec later I was using the tor-enabled Firefox to surf past my Internet provider's impromptu block against ISG. Easy as 1-2-3. For my work PC, it was trickier because I had to modify one of the tor setting files to show which proxy server my company uses. This involved an hour or so of surfing the Torpark online forums to get some idea how to tweak settings (DON'T send me any PMs to help with this geek crap), but as of today I can now surf ISG (any any other illicit site that I want) from my cube. :D I know how many millions of Euros my company has spent globally to put in platinum-class routers, firewall and usage screening software, so I marvelled at the fact that Torpark cut through these obstacles. In addition, I love the fact that, since I installed it to a USB key, that there is never any evidence of illicit surfing software or my nasty surfing history on either my work or home PC. :rolleyes:

Q: Any downsides? Yes, it can be slow, because your traffic has to go thru the tor network - anonymity has its price! Also, there is a known conflict with Zone Alarm firewall (which I use) - not malicious, but annoying.
